October 26, 1836: The obituary of William Harrison Goodlove indicates that he,

William Harrison, was born in Clark County, Ohio, October 26, 1836, a son of Conrad and Katharine (McKinnon) Goodlove; “the former

( Conrad) born in West Virginia “ [11]

Another place of birth was reported by Conrad Goodlove to the census takers and the copies which we obtained for several years indicate that his place of birth was Pennsylvania. [12]

In the Ohio Family History Center at Troy, Ohio, in an old book, “History of Logan County and Ohio” we found a biographical sketch written about Dr. William Goodlove, son of Conrad’s first son, John, wherein on page 691 (See Ref.#2.0) it stated that Conrad was born in Germany, and coming to the United States, settled in Berks County, PA.

In addition to this verification there is no actual birth record for Conrad, but according to Dorothy Nordgren there was a family bible and she said she thought that birth dates were passed down from that source. Perhaps some day this bible will be located and a birthplace, date and parentage verified.

Near miss during the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands, October 26, 1942.

Japanese bomb exploded off port side of Enterprise during Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands, October 26, 1942[19]

After undergoing repairs, the Enterprise put back out, and on October 26, 1942 discovered a Japanese carrier fleet in the South Pacific. The Enterprise and the Hornet, comprising a task force, engaged the Japanese force.

The Enterprise again took direct hits from Japanese planes, but managed to stay operational. When the Hornet was sunk, the Enterprise accommodated her stranded aircraft compliment.

The result of the battle was a victory for the Japanese Navy. The sinking of the Hornet meant that the Enterprise was the only American aircraft carrier remaining in the Pacific Theater. In response, her crew defiantly hung up a banner reading “Enterprise vs. Japan.

Guadalcanal

After the damaged sustained during the Battled of the Santa Cruz Islands could not be repaired before the Enterprise was called to the Solomon Islands for duty, she actually set sail for Guadalcanal while still under repairs. Welders and mechanics continued to work around the clock to fix the ship, even after she had engaged the enemy.

On October 26, Enterprise scout planes located a Japanese carrier force and the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands was under way. Enterprise aircraft struck carriers and cruisers during the struggle, while the "Big E" herself underwent intensive attack. Hit twice by bombs, Enterprise lost 44 men and had 75 wounded. Despite serious damage, she continued in action and took on board a large number of planes and crewmen from Hornet when that carrier was sunk. Though the American losses of a carrier and a destroyer were more severe than the Japanese loss of one light cruiser, the battle gained time to reinforce Guadalcanal against the next enemy onslaught, and nearby Henderson Field was therefore secure from the Japanese bombardment. The loss of the Hornet meant Enterprise was now the only functioning (albeit damaged) US carrier in the Pacific Theater. [4]On the flight deck, the crew posted a sign: "Enterprise vs Japan."
