October 3, 1863

Thanksgiving may have been in Plymouth, Mass. In 1621, but Thanksgiving was not established as an annual national holiday until 1863. That year, in the midst of the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln issued his Thanksgiving Day Proclamation, making the day an annual event. For this Thanksgiving, we’re reprinting the text of Lincoln’s speech, which he delivered onlyh a few weeks before his most famous speech, the Gettysburg address.

“The year that is drawing toward its close has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which theyu come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of almighty God. In the midst of a civil war of unequaled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign states to invite and provoke their aggressions, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prev ailed everywhere, except in the theater ofr military conflict; while that theater has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union. Needful diversions of navies of the Union. Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the fields of peaceful industry to the national defense have not arrested the plow, the shuyttle, or the ship; the ax has enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well of iron and coal as the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than heretorfore. Population has steadily increased, notwithstanding the waste that has been made in the camp, the siege, and the battlefield, and the country, rejoicing in the consciousness of augmented strength and vigor, is permitted to expect con tinuance of years with large increase of freedom.

No human counsel hath devised, nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the most high God, who while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy.

It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and one voice by the whole American people. I do, therefore, invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next as a day of thanksgiving and praise to our benefiecent Father who dwelleth in the heavens. And I recommend to them that, while offering up the ascriptions justly due to him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also , with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to his tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners, sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the almighty hand to heal the wounds of the nation, and to restore it, as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes, to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquility, and union.

In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the United States to be affixed.

President Abraham Lincoln,

Thanksgiving Day Proclamation, October 3, 1863 [12]

It is interesting to note that on October 3, 1863 President Abraham Lincoln issued the first Thanksgiving Proclamation. Just five days prior he had received a letter from Sarah Josepha Hale, a 74 year old magazine editor, who had been advocationg a national thanksgiving date for 15 years as editor of Godey’s Lady’s Book. Lincoln listened, where other presidents ignored her. It was at that point, that the last Thursday of November was set as a national “day of Thanksgiving and praise”. This was during the height of the Civil War. It was a very moving and inspirational proclamation and asked to “implore the Interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of a nation and restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes”..….According to ”The Collected Works of Abraham Lincoln” edited by Roy Basler, a year later the proclamation manuscript, handwritten by William Seward, then Secretary of State, was sold and its proceeds were used to benefit Union troops. It is interesting that a document that was meant to bring reconciliation to a nation was ultimately used to fund the Civil War.

In an article written in October 1986 by Nancy G. Houser, titled “Whose Thanksgiving Is It?”, she refers to other observances of thanks being given, both before and after what we consider to be the “official” first Thanksgiving. All of those observances were spontaneous and were not repeated on a regular basis, as was the Berkeley ritual.

The annual Berkeley religious ceremony was performed as a result of specific instructions given by the London Company to do so, it was almost two years before the Massachusetts celebration which was a one time event based upon the recommendation of Massachusettts Governor Bradford and was not held because of any official proclamation from England. They held several Thanksgiving’s after that, but not on a regular basis. Massachusetts didn’t even publish a proclamation ordaining such a thanksgiving observance until 1633, 12 years after their first celebration. The Massachusetts event was more social than religious, whereas the Berkeley event was strictly religious.[13]

October 3, 1864: McNeill became captain of Company E of the 18th Virginia Cavalry, more commonly known as McNeill's Rangers. Along with raids on railroads and wagon trains, he first proposed the operation that became the Jones-Imboden Raid.

His final action occurred on October 3, 1864, in which he led his unit in an attack on Union soldiers near Mount Jackson, Virginia. Although it was a victory for his forces, he was severely wounded and taken to Harrisonburg, Virginia, where he died on November 10, 1864.[14]

October 3, 1935: Mussolini’s Italian Army invades Abyssinia (Ethiopia). This first fascist attack on another nation goes virtually unanswered by the international community. The lack of response strengthens Hitler’s notion that the decadent Western Allies will not stand in his way and thus this seemingly innocuous attack on a defenseless African nation is a major step on the road to World War II and the Final Solution.[23]

It is claimed in Acksum, that a raid was mounted on the city during world war II by a joint force of German and Italian troops and that the Ethiopians had gotten the ark out of the city using a series of tunnels and that the ark was not captured.

Every single church in Ethiopia, and there are more than 20,000 of them has a replica of the Ark of the Covenant in its holy of holies. It’s the only country in the world that claims to possess the lost Ark of the Covenant. For everyone else it’s lost, for them it’s not, they have it.[24]

The most sacred belief of Ethiopian Christians is that the Ark of the Covenant is housed there at “Acksum”. It’s in a chapel but no one is allowed in that chapel except a priest who guards it with his life and for his life.[25]

• No one is allowed in the sanctuary where the lost ark of the covenant is kept, not even the Empress of Ethiopia. The guardian of the ark says it is a thing of fire. Two years after an interview the guardian was dead. Two years after that, another guardian died too.

• So powerful is this story that it appears in all of the chronicles of the kings of Ethiopia and was twice written into the constitution of Ethiopia in the twentieth century. [26]

• bolic sign of the Nazification of Germany.[27]

October 3, 1940

The Vichy Government enacts a “Statut des Juifs,” France’s first overtly anti-Semitic law, imposing special regulations on Jews and excluding them from public life. Jews are dismissed from the Civil Service, the armed forces officer corps, and from teaching. They are forbidden to work in the press, radio, theater, or cinema, and their ouster from all professions is foreseen. While the German occupation regulations of September 27 defined Jews only in terms of their religion, the statute proclaims that Jews are a race:

“We, Marshal of France, Chief of the French State, with agreement of the Council of Ministers, decree:

Art. I. Is considered a Jew, for application of the present law, any person descended from three grandparents of Jewish race or from two grandparents of the same race if his spouse is also a Jew.[30]”

The Vichy government was eager to be part of Hitler’s New Europe and willingly sacrificed Jews living in France to show their loyalty.[31]

The first Statiut des Juifs, are modeled on the German Nuremberg Laws, and lik them, are widely accepted. Passed in anticipation of Nazi pressure, the laws primary aims are to force Jews out of public service, teaching, financial occupations, public relations, and the media.[32]

Anti-Masonic pamphlets, posters, cartoons and propaganda, from the Nazi period ties the Masonic Craft to Judaism.[33]

October 3 - 4, 1963 Although Oswald’s family has preceded him to this city, Dallas

YMCA records show that an Oswald stays there on these dates. This same YMCA is frequented

by Jack Ruby.

[Oct. 3] The Dallas office of the FBI receives a bulletin from the New Orleans office:

LHO and Marina Oswald have completely disappeared. They were last seen moving out of their

apartment on Magazine Street. Marina and their two-year-old child have left in a station wagon

bearing Texas license plates. The driver was a woman who could speak Russian. LHO did not

go with them but remains behind at the apartment. The next day he is gone too. This is a request

of the New Orleans office for a search to be initiated at once. FBI Agent James P. Hosty of the

Dallas internal security squad is given the assignment of covering the areas in and around his

home city.

Also on this date -- Charles Willoughby, in a letter to Henry Cabot Lodge, says: “I

understand your position completely. As MacArthur’s Chief of Intelligence, I had to cope with it from

1939 to 1951. You are enmeshed in a web of empire builders that once frustrated [General Albert]

Wedemeyer in China and when they could not handle Mac Arthur, they intrigued against him. He

fought for an important principle: the control of all ‘agencies’ within his area as a function of normal

command responsibility. It applies everywhere, in peace or war, from G.H.Q. to Embassies.

Congratulations that you have met this ‘fifth column’ head on!” [39]

October 3, 1963 - THE NEW YORK TIMES: The Central Intelligence Agency is getting a

very bad press in dispatches from Vietnam to American newspapers and in articles originating in

Washington... This Presidential policy [of protecting CIA secrecy] has not, however, always

restrained other executive units from going confidentially to the press with attacks on CIA

operations in their common field of responsibility. And usually it has been possible to deduce

these operational details from the nature of the attacks. But the peak of the practice has recently

been reached in Vietnam and in Washington. This is revealed almost every day now in

dispatches from reporters -- in close touch with intra-Administration critics of the CIA -- with

excellent reputations for reliability. One reporter in this category is Richard Stames of the

Scripps-Howard newspapers . Today, under a Saigon dateline, he relates that “according to a high

United States source here, twice the CIA flatly refused to carry out instructions from Ambassador Henry

Cabot Lodge ... [and] in one instance frustrated a plan of action Mr. Lodge brought from Washington

because the agency disagreed with it.” Among the views attributed to United States officials on the

scene, including one described as “very high American Official ... who has spent much of his life in the

service of democracy ...” are the following: The CIA’s growth was “likened to a malignancy” which

the “very high official was not sure even the White House could control . . . any longer.” “If the United

States ever experiences [an attempt at a coup to overthrow the Government] it will come from the CIA and

not the Pentagon.” The agency “represents a tremendous power and total unaccountability to anyone.”

Jack Ruby attempts to call a friend, Russell Mathews, an associate of Traficante and

Campisi. A call was placed from the Carousel Club to a number in Shreveport, Louisiana, listed

to Elizabeth Mathews, Russell’s former wife. AOT[40]

J. Travis. "The Priests' Chromosome? DNA analysis supports the biblical story of the Jewish priesthood." Science News 154:14 (October 3, 1998): 218. Excerpts:

"...Hoping to tap this genetic gold mine, in 1996 Skorecki contacted Michael F. Hammer of the University of Arizona in Tucson, who has used the Y chromosome to investigate the origins of people in Japan (SN: 2/15/97, p. 106) and elsewhere. Working with colleagues at University College London, Skorecki and Hammer obtained DNA samples of 188 Jewish men from Israel, Canada, and the United Kingdom, 68 of whom called themselves cohanim. The scientists focused on two genetic markers on the Y chromosome... From their analysis of YAP and another genetic marker, Skorecki, Hammer, and their colleagues concluded that the Y chromosomes of cohanim are indeed distinct from those of others Jews, which supports the oral tradition of father-to-son transmission of priestly status. "There's nothing unique or special about these markers," he [Skorecki] says, pointing out that many noncohanim, and even non-Jews, possess the same markers. In fact, the researchers hope to document the dispersal of the original Hebrew people from which Jews originated by studying the frequency with which the cohanim chromosome appears in various Jewish and non-Jewish populations worldwide..."

October 3, 1998: Date calculations based on the mutations yield a time frame for the Cohen line of some 3,300 years!

Professor Hammer was recently in Israel for the Jewish Genome Conference. He confirmed that his findings are consistent -- over 80 percent of self-identified Cohanim have a common set of markers.

The finding that less than one-third of the non-Cohen Jews who were tested possess these markers is not surprising to the geneticists. Jewishness is not defined genetically. Other Y-chromosomes can enter the Jewish gene pool through conversion or through a non-Jewish father. Jewish status is determined by the mother. Tribe membership follows the father's line.

AMAZING STATISTICS

Calculations based on the high rate of genetic similarity of today's Cohanim resulted in the highest "paternity-certainty" rate ever recorded in population genetics studies -- a scientific testimony to family faithfulness.

Stated Dr. David Goldstein of Oxford University:

"For more than 90 percent of the Cohens to share the same genetic markers after such a period of time is a testament to the devotion of the wives of the Cohens over the years. Even a low rate of infidelity would have dramatically lowered the percentage."

[Science News, October 3, 1998]

Wider genetic studies of diverse present day Jewish communities show a remarkable genetic cohesiveness. Jews from Iran, Iraq, Yemen, North Africa and European Ashkenazim all cluster together with other Semitic groups, with their origin in the Middle East. A common geographical original can be seen for all mainstream Jewish groups studied.

This genetic research has clearly refuted the libel that the Ashkenazi Jews are not related to the ancient Hebrews, but are descendants of the Kuzar tribe -- a pre-10th century Turko-Asian empire which reportedly converted en masse to Judaism. Researchers compared the DNA signature of the Ashkenazi Jews against those of Turkish-derived people, and found no correspondence. [42]

A new dinosaur species named Pegomastax …

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A new dinosaur the size of a house cat and described as a cross between "a bird, a vampire and a porcupine" has been identified in a piece of rock from South Africa.

University of Chicago paleontologist Paul Sereno, who published the findings on Wednesday in the online scientific journal ZooKeys, said in an interview with Reuters he actually made the discovery of the small-bodied herbivore in 1983.

Sereno, whose research involves mapping the dinosaur family tree, said he came upon the specimen as a graduate student while doing research in a Harvard University laboratory and intended to write about it immediately.

"I said, 'Whoa!' I realized it was a new species from the moment I set eyes on it," Sereno said. But he says he grew distracted by other things, and had in mind a more ambitious research project.

"There was always a danger that someone would discover it and write about it, and I would read about it," he said, but added it was all for the best: "Hey, I'm smarter than I was then."

The strange-looking species, which Sereno has named Pegomastax africanus, or "thick jaw from Africa," lived between 100 million and 200 million years ago.

"I describe it as a bird, a vampire and a porcupine," Sereno said. It had the weight of a small house cat and stood less than a foot off of the ground.

It had a thick jaw and a blunt beak with a "heightened tooth that sticks down, dagger-like," Sereno said. He said it would have been part of one of three groups that form the base of the dinosaur tree.
