Jeff,

RULES OF LIFE

DRINK, STEAL, SWEAR & LIE

I met this guy
while I was in Germany

and he has
a motto he
lives by everyday .

He said listen carefully and
live by these 4 rules:

Drink, Steal, Swear, & Lie.

I was shaking my head 'no',

but he then told me he would explain his four rules.

So here they are:

1.. "Drink" from
the "everlasting cup" every day.

2.. "Steal" a
moment to help someone that is in worse

shape than you are.

3.. "Swear" that

you will be a better person today than yesterday.

4.. And last, but not least, when you "lie" down

at night, thank God you live in America and

have freedom.

I am not as good as I should be,

I am not as good as I could be. But THANK GOD I am better than I used to be! From Jeff P.

Jeff-- Mazal tov!!! Susan

Susan, The letters are so small! How can people read this stuff? No wonder no one reads yiddish. You go blind just trying! Jeff

In a message dated 12/13/2010 11:28:04 P.M. Central Standard Time, SUSANLDD2@aol.com writes:

Jeff--wow!! You're ambition is staggering. I would imagine you could translate word for word to Hebrew and German or Yiddish but what a task that would be. I know that when I'm in Germany I can understand a bissel--but I gather from R that the book does translate to Yiddish and there are words that would not be understood in German. And of course there are Hebrew words or phrases thrown in as well.

I dont know how to tell you where to begin. And yes Hebrew is read from the right to the left.

If you notice the Glossary that I sent to you doesn't always have useful phrases but has more of the common phrases, words and "curses" that many of my generation were brought up with. Sometimes I find it hard to express myself without using a Yiddish expression.

I admire your tenacity and perhaps one of these days I will take you up on your offer to help with my search for my Gottlieb ancestry. BTW--on my father's side I am a Levi--My maiden name is Levine. My children dont benefit from that.

Susan

Susan, I picked up a "Yiddish for Dummies" book which is quite appropriate. It has a chart of letters which I will use to compare with. I will have to blow up the pages though, first because they are small and are close together but second, so I can pencil in the letter in English. That's what the plan is for now but I need a better magnifying glass and copier! Of course, I could also translate the Torah too. Now that would be ambitious, For now, one letter at a time. There was a show on the dead sea scrolls on National Geographic last night. It is interesting how the text of the Torah or Old Testament is exactly the same. That is a very cool thing. It is not like the English Bible, which keeps getting retranslated into the current vernacular.

One thing I will tell you about family history, start now and talk to the oldest living relatives today. If anyone has family albums, or records get copies today. Write everything down no matter how insignificant it might seem. Get a computer program to keep the information organized. You will go back to it a million times.

Let me know if you need anything. It is cool that you are a Levite. Here is what I just looked up about the Levites. Wow!

In Jewish tradition, a Levite (Hebrew: לֵוִי, Modern Levi Tiberian Lēwî ; "Attached") is a member of the Hebrew tribe of Levi. When Joshua led the Israelites into the land of Canaan, the Levites were the only Israelite tribe that received cities but no tribal land "because the Lord the God of Israel himself is their inheritance" (Deuteronomy 18:2).[1][2] The Tribe of Levi served particular religious duties for the Israelites and had political responsibilities as well. In return, the landed tribes were expected to give tithe to the Levites, particularly the tithe known as the Maaser Rishon or Levite Tithe. In current Jewish practise, dating from the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem, the communal privileges and responsibilities of Levites are mainly limited to the synagogue Torah reading and the ritual of pidyon haben.

Moses and his brother, Aaron, were both Levites. The descendants of Aaron, who was the first kohen gadol, high priest, of Israel, were designated as the priestly class, the kohanim. As such, kohanim comprise a family dynasty within the tribe of Levi, and thus all kohanim are Levites, but not all Levites are kohanim.

Y-chromosome in Levite
A 2003 study of the Y-chromosome by Behar et al. points to multiple origins for AshkenaziLevites, a priestly class who comprise approximately 4% of Ashkenazi Jews. It found that Haplogroup R1a1a (R-M17), uncommon in the Middle East or among Sephardi Jews, originating in Central Asia and dominant in Eastern Europe, is present in over 50% of Ashkenazi Levites, while the rest of Ashkenazi Levites' paternal lineage is of Middle Eastern origin. Behar suggests a founding event, probably involving one or very few European men, occurring at a time close to the initial formation and settlement of the Ashkenazi community as a possible explanation.[3] As Nebel, Behar and Goldstein speculate that this may indicate a Khazar origin.[4]

In the Bible
The tribe is named after Levi, one of the twelve sons of Jacob (also called Israel). Levi had three sons: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari (Genesis 46:11).

Kohath's son Amram was the father of Miriam, Aaron and Moses. The descendants of Aaron: the Kohanim ("Priests"), had the special role as priests in the Tabernacle in the wilderness and also in the Temple in Jerusalem. The remaining Levites (Levi'yim in Hebrew), divided into three groups (the descendants of Gershon, or Gershonites, the descendants of Kohath, or Kohathites, and the descendants of Merari, or Merarites) each filled different roles in the Tabernacle and later in the Temple services.

Levites' principal roles in the Temple included singing Psalms during Temple services, performing construction and maintenance for the Temple, serving as guards, and performing other services. Levites also served as teachers and judges, maintaining cities of refuge in Biblical times. The Book of Ezra reports that the Levites were responsible for the construction of the Second Temple and also translated and explained the Torah when it was publicly read.

In Egypt the Levites were the only tribe that remained committed to God. During the Exodus the Levite tribe were particularly zealous in protecting the Mosaic law in the face of those worshipping the Golden Calf, which may have been a reason for their priestly status.[5]

In the Torah
In the Book of Numbers the Levites were charged with ministering to the Kohanim (priests) and keeping watch over the Tabernacle:

2 And with you bring your brother also, the tribe of Levi, the tribe of your father, that they may join you and minister to you while you and your sons with you are before the tent of the testimony. 3 They shall keep guard over you and over the whole tent, but shall not come near to the vessels of the sanctuary or to the altar lest they, and you, die. 4 They shall join you and keep guard over the tent of meeting for all the service of the tent, and no outsider shall come near you. 5 And you shall keep guard over the sanctuary and over the altar, that there may never again be wrath on the people of Israel. 6 And behold, I have taken your brothers the Levites from among the people of Israel. They are a gift to you, given to the Lord, to do the service of the tent of meeting. Numbers 18:2-4;6 (ESV)[1]

George Washington sets up a rental agreement with the wife of his late brother Lawrence for the Mount Vernon estate. The rent will consist of 15,000 pounds of tobacco per year for use of the lands, house, and the eighteen resident slaves. The rent is also payable in money at the rate of twelve shillings and six pence per hundred pounds. [2]

George Washington To CAPTAIN ROBERT STEWART

Fort Loudon, December 17, 1756.

Sir: Ensign Crawford (Compilers 6th great grandfather) has referred a dispute to me concerning his rank in the Army. I must determine in his favour and allow their Officers to rank by the dates and dignity o their Commissions. For these reasons; vizt. That Companies tho’ esteemed and called Scouts, are raised and supported upon the same funds as those of the Regiment; have the same pay entitled to the same privileges and immunities; and are subject to the same laws and punishments: therefore ought, in justice to have the same rank. The only distinction between them and the Companies of the Regiment lies in this. Were we upon march, they must, from the nature of their Establishment encounter more hardship danger and fatigue; which in my opinion, shou’d rather encrease than diminish their claim to Honor!

It is a mistaken notion, in some, that they are Rangers, and shou’d rank as such. The Rangers had a particular sum levie for their support, and laws made to govern them by; distinct from those we have the honor to act under. To put an end all future disputes, let the Officers be made acquainted wit the contents of this letter. I am Sir, Yours &c.[3]

1757

Sometime, not too long after the move to PA, George married again. In filling out pension applications for the War of 1812, Isaac Cutlip (son of David) and Samuel Cutlip (son of George) swore that their fathers were "half-brothers." So, George probably married his second (or third, or ...) wife in the mid-1750s. David was probably born on the PA frontier about 1757, making him 18–19 at the outbreak of the AmRevWar in which he took part. As a guess, Abraham may have been born a year or two later. Many questions haunt us about the early years: Was "Christina" George's first wife? Did "Christina" leave him? Or, was Christina a daughter? Or, no relation, at all? Did Abraham move to Georgia and start the Cutliff clan which spread across the south?[4]

1757: By 1757 Lawrence Harrison had lived long enough in Frederick County, Virginia, to become overseer of a road from Worthington’s marsh to Thomas Lindsay’s.[5]

George Washington’s Journal:

December 17, 1771; Killed my pork and distributed the overseers their shares.[6]

1771-1773: It is important that I note here that a conflict between Pennsylvania and Virginia resulted in what was Bedford County in 1771 was changed to Westmoreland in 1773 then to Fayette County in 1783.[o1]

What was Westmoreland County, Virginia, when Daniel McKinnon and Nancy Harrison were married about 1789, was still Bedford County in 1772 until 1773, then Westmoreland, then Fayette County, PA.[7]

1772: In 1772, Jacob Hite pursued his claim against Crawford and the executors of Harrison’s estate. Jacob Hite thought of Lawrence Harrison’s widow as Katharina. Papers recorded in later years in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, support Jacob Hite’s idea. Although she sometimes appeared in the record as Catherine, Lawrence Harrison’s widow called herself Katherina.[8]

Bedford County was erected in 1771 and from it, later Fayette County was erected in 1783. While the lands which he (Lawrence3 Harrison) and his children owned are in what is known as Fayette County now, they were during his lifetime in Bedford County, where "Letters of Administration were granted to Catherine Harrison, his wife, and son, William4 Harrison, January 14, 1772." (The Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania Publications, Vol 10, p. 66.) Research has, so far, failed to disclose the family name of Catherine, wife of Lawrence Harrison. Sometime following her husband's death, Catherine Harrison, went to Kentucky and was residing with her sister, Mary (Harrison) Moore, wife of Captain Thomas Moore, where she died in 1836. [9]

LIST OF SETTLERS IN FAYETTE

AND TN CONTIGUOUS PARTS OF

GREENE, WASHINGTON & WESTMORELAND COUNTIES,

IN 1772:

COPIED FROM THE OFFICIAL ASSESSMENT ROLLS OF BEDFORD COUNTY FOR 1771.

In 1772; and until the erection of Westmoreland in 1773, Bedford county embraced all of South-western Pennsylvania.

All of what Is now Fayette county, east of a straight line from the mouth of Redstone to the mouth of Jacob’s creek, composed two townships, Spring-hill and Tyrone, between which the division line was Redstone creek, from Its mouth to where it was crossed by Burd’s Road, thence Burd’s Road to Gist’s, thence Braddock’s Road to the Great Crossings. That part of Fayette which is west (or north-west) of the line from the mouth of Redstone to the mouth of Jacob’s creek, was included in Rostraver township; which then embraced all of the “Forks of Yough” to the junction.

All of Greene and of Washington counties, which were then supposed to be within the limits of Pennsylvania, and lying west of Fayette, seem to have been included in Springhill.

We give the entire lists for Springhill, Tyrone and Rostraver.(a)

When but nineteen years of age and while still serving an apprenticeship he suddenly decided to embark for America, and landed at Annapolis, MD in 1771. From the fact that a Dodson family was then prominent in the vicicnity of Annapolis, having settled there in the latter part of 1600, said John, of Shrewsbury, England may have been attracted there from a probable kinship and knowledge of them.[14]

1772

In 1772 Daniel McKinnon is listed as the Minister at St. Margaret's Westminister (Broad Neck) Parish in back in . (This parish is a penensula of land on the Anne Arundel County Maryland Chesapeake Bay between the Severn and Magothy Rivers and near Annapolis.)[15]

1772: Richard Challoner’s fifth(and last) revision of Rheims New Testament.[16]

1772: Prussia’s power grew and in 1772, under King Friedrich II (Frederick the Great), consisted of the provinces of Brandenburg, Pomerania, Danzig, West Prussia and East Prussia (modern day East Germany, northern Poland, and a small portion of

the Soviet Union).[17]

1772: the anti-Russian movement "Confederation of Bar" is crushed by Russia that partitions one fourth of Poland with Prussia and Austria (Galicia, Krakow) [18]

The map of Central Europe in 1772. The Kingdom of Poland is marked in white; Russia - in green, Austria - in yellow and Prussia - in blue. Present-day political boundaries are shown as red lines. Present names of cities are also given.

[19]

Between 1772 and 1795 the entire territory of the Kingdom of Poland was divided between Prussia, Austria and Russia. During those so-called Partitions of Poland, Prussia acquired the western regions of Poland, esp. those, which were later renamed to West Prussia (formerly Royal Prussia) and Province of Posen (the area around Poznan, the Polish name being Wielkopolska, i.e. Greater Poland). The southern Polish territories around Kraków and Lwów were incorporated into the Austrian Empire and renamed "Galicia". The central and eastern provinces of Poland were taken over by the Russian Empire. Only during a short period when Napoleon Bonaparte conquered Central Europe, [20]he restored Poland as a Duchy of Warsaw, dependent on himself, consisting of the territories Prussia and Austria had annexed in 1793-95.

1772: In the last 23 years of his rule until 1786, Frederick II, who understood himself as the "first servant of the state", promoted the development and further settling of Prussian areas, such as the Oderbruch. At the same time he built up Prussia's military power and participated in the First Partition of Poland with Austria and Russia (1772), an act which finally connected the Brandenburg territories with those of Prussia proper. During this period, he also opened Prussia's borders to immigrants fleeing from religious persecution in other parts of Europe, such as the Huguenots. Prussia became a safe haven in much the same way that the United States welcomed immigrants seeking freedom in the 19th century.[21]

1772: During the First Polish Republic (1569-1795), this area was known as Cracow and Sandomierz palatinates. Between 1772 and 1795 Poland was partitioned between the three neighboring European Empires: Russia, Prussia and Austria. In the first partition of 1772, one third of Poland's territory was taken. The area occupied by Austria was given the name of Galicia. In the second partition of 1793, Russia obtained one half on the remaining territory of Poland, while Prussia took the province of Poznan.

The third and final partition occurred in 1795, as the remnants of Poland were divided amongst Russia, Austria, and Prussia. Poland ceased to exist as a political entity. It disappeared from the map of Europe for over 100 years, not to reappear until after World War I. In the third partition, Austria annexed the large area between the Bug and Pilica rivers, including the Kielce-Radom area. Austria named this area New or West Galicia; the area that had been taken in 1772 was renamed East Galicia. West Galicia and East Galicia were merged into the single province of Galicia in 1803.[22]

1772: Jews deported to the Pale of Settlement (Russia).[23]

December 1773: George Washington to John Murray, Earl of Dunmore[24],

…Patents have been issued under your Lordships signature and the seal of the Colony, ever since the first of December 1773. Would it not be exceedingly hard then, my Lord, under these circumstances, at his late day, after we had proceeded in all respects agreeably to the orders of Government and after many of us have been run :0 great and considerable expense, to declare that the Surveys Ire invalid? It appears in so uncommon a light to me, that I hardly know yet how to persuade myself into a belief of the reality of it, nor should I have given your Lordship any trouble on the subject at this time, but for the importunity of others, and from a desire (as I shall leave home the first of May) of knowing if the account be true, what steps the grantees, under the afore-mentioned Proclamation, are further to take.

I beg your Lordships excuse for the length and freedom of this epistle. I am persuaded you possess too much candor yourself to be offended at it in others, in relating of facts, especially, as I profess myself to be, with the utmost respect, etc.[25]

December 1776: Valentine Crawford was a Colonel in the Virginia Militia December, 1776, where he served as Wagon Master General. He also acted as secretary and assistant to George Washington. Valentine is the compilers 6th great grand uncle.

December 1777: Also, it could be argued that if she learned of the content of Joseph Howard Sr.'s December 1777 will and that she was not included, this could have been her motivation for declaring it on the marriage license.

In light of the evidence found which applies to both Eleanor McKinnon and Eleanor Howard and the fact that no evidence found contradict the assumption that Eleanor McKinnon are the same, it is a reasonable conclusion that they are in fact the same person.

Unfortunately, the above still leaves many questions open such as when and by whom were they married, what happened between 1778 and when they arrived in Hamilton County, Ohio in 1795, why William had the middle name Beal, etc. But, a s anyone experienced in research knows, all questions are rarely answered.[29]

December 17, 1867: On this date in 1867, the Grand Lodge of Idaho was formed.[30]

1868

Theopolis McKinnon voted for Grant for President.[31]

• Sara Gottlieb born December 17, 1871 in Lichenroth, Hessen-Nassau Prenzlauer Berg, Schonhauser Allee 127 a; 9.. Resided Berlin. Deportation: from Berlin on January 19, 1942, Riga. Place of death Riga, missing.[32]

December 17, 1885: The surviving members of the Twenty-fourth Regiment of Iowa Volunteer Infantry assembled in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on December 17, 1865. (1885) Twenty years had passed since the Temperance Regiment had been mustered out of service. Nostalgia enveloped the proceedings as the veterans gathered in front of a large oil portrait, draped with the tattered and worn battle flag of the regiment, of Colonel John Q. Wilds. Ed Wright was the guest of honor. Wright had been breveted brigadier general prior to the mustering out, and distinguished officer had continued his career of public service in civilian life. General Wright had been elected to the Iowa’s State General Assembly, where he was chosen Speaker of the House. Although every company was represented at the evening roll call, fewer than 200 members were present. nThe aging survivors tole a glowing story of their three years of service. Not until three o’clock in the morning was the glorious record of the old 24th completely recounted. While the reminiscences suffered from the clouded memories of veterans proud of difficult service, the historic record of the fighting regiment needed no embellishment. [33]

December 17, 1908: Rev. John GUTLEBEN was born on June 29, 1847 in Muhlbach,Munster,Colmar,Upper Rhine,Alsace and died after 1920 in Fruitvale,Alameda,CA.

John married Madeleine Frederique HELMSTADER (d. December 17, 1908) on October 26, 1871. [34]

• December 17, 1942: An Allied declaration is made condemning the Nazis’ “bestial policy of cold-blooded extermination.”[35]

December 17, 1943: This convoy is numbered 64 because of a German mix-up in the files with the convoy of December 17, which is numbered 63. It (Convoy 64) carried 575 males and 422 females. The age composition of the youth was similar to Convoy 62, with 161 people under 18, of whom 106 were children under 12.

Also deported with this convoy was Raymond-Raoul Lambert, 49, President of the IGIF, his wife Simone, 39, and their four children. Their deportation at this time was due to the protests of Mr. Lambert to the Vichy Government (document XXVII-36, of August 15, 1943. [36]

Raymond-Raoul Lamberts Diary has been among the most important untranslated records of the experience of French Jews in the Holocaust. Lambert, a leader of the Union of French Jews (UGIF), was, in the words of the historian Michael Marrus, “arguably the most important Jewish official in contact with the Vichy government and the Germans.” Lambert’s Diary survived the war and was published in France in 1985. It reveals Lambert’s efforts to save the Jews in France, particularly the children.[37] The book is titled “Diary of a Witness, 1940-1943”, Ivan R. Dee, Publisher. ISBN: 1-56663-740-6/978-1-56663-740-4.

On board Convoy 64 on December 7, 1943 was Fanny Gotlib born December 6, 1904 from St. Denis.[38]

In 1945 there were 50 survivors, two of them women.[39]

[10] THE MONONGAHELA OF OLD. pp. 200-203

[11] John Crawford was born Dec 27, 1744, Aug 17, 1750, May 1750, or 1752 in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. He died Sept 22, 1816 at Iron Ridge, overlooking the Ohio River at the mouth of Brush Creek, in Adams County, Ohio, where he had settled after selling his family farm in Fayette County, PA. He is the only son of Col. William Crawford.

Johns descendants filed for bounty land saying that John was the sole heir of William Crawford. Warrant 8649 for 2037 acres was issued to them Dec. 15, 1838. Information contained in the application is included in the following account of John's descendants. A pulished account can be found in L. A. Burgess, Virginia Soldiers of 1776, Vol. !, pp. 463-465, Reprint Co., Spartanburg, S. C.

Much confusion has been created about John BY THE BOOK OF GRACE EMAHISER, WHO CLAIMED THAT JOHN AND EFFY DID NOT MARRY UNTIL 1797, THAT JOHN SON OF WILLIAM DIED C. 1796, AND THAT MOSES HIS SON LIVED UNTIL 1830. a COMPLETE AND CAREFUL SEARCH OF ADAMS COUNTY AND OTHER RECORDS WILL OF ROBERTA SMITH'S EVIDENCE, WHICH IS NOT INCLUDED HERE FOR SPACE CONSIDERATIONS.

He married twice. It appears to me (Karen Garnett) that John Crawford was first married to Frances Bradford, and she died in PA, probably by 1778. John then married Effie, though official record was lost. She is probably the vivacious Miss Grimes always about the Crawford household in 1775. In 1797 in Adams County, John, for legal reasons had to prove his identity, and Effie is then registered as his wife. It is also possible that there was a common law marriage here, since Col. Wm. in his will makes special mention of "heirs lawfully begotten." Emahiser seems to think that they married as early as 1767.

Much information concerning John's family is preserved in a application for Bounty Land granted Dec 15, 1838. A synopsis of the petition is recorded in L. A. Burgess Virginia Soldiers of 1776, vol. 1, pp. 463-465. (Reprint Co, Spartanburg, S.C. The heirs who made the petition were residents of lewis Co KY, Owens Co KY and Adams Co OH. The following information concerning John's descendants corresponds with the information in that petition.

John's first wife was Frances Bradford, born in Fanquir Co., VA. They were married in 1774, either in Virginia or Pennsylvania. She died in present day Fayette Co. PA after 1790 (if G. W. Crawford is her son)... They had seven children.
