Twenty Seconds of Silence...Then Screaming

Dear Jeff,

David Somech, a resident of Jerusalem, was waiting for a bus in the Holy City last week when the terrorist bomb exploded, killing one and injuring dozens more. Somech, treated for shock but not wounded, described the attack this way. "There was 20 seconds of silence before the screaming began, and chaos. I started to help evacuate people, and then the medics suggested that I should head to the hospital to make sure that I was all right."

Another young victim, fourteen years old, had just passed a yeshiva entrance exam and was on his way home when the bomb went off. "I didn't understand at first that it was a terror attack; I was worried about my leg," he said. Metal shrapnel cut into his leg, but the blood loss was stopped, and he is expected to recover.

Some analysts fear that the dramatic increase in terrorist attacks against Israel in the past two weeks could signal the start of a new intifada (uprising) against Israel...or perhaps even the beginning of a new round of all-out war. Iran has long been suspected of plotting to use their terrorist proxies to launch such an attack in an attempt to pin Israel down and prevent military action against Iran's nuclear program.

Iran Government Releases "Second Coming" Video

Dear Jeff,

The government of Iran has released a movie called The Coming Is Near designed to prepare Muslims around the world for the return of the "twelfth Mahdi." This radical Islamic doctrine, devoutly believed by Iranian President Ahmadinejad, teaches that an end-time war will sweep the world following which this hidden descendant of Mohammed will return to place the entire earth under Shari'a law.

The video claims that Iran is destined to rise as a great power in the last days to help defeat America and Israel and usher in the return of the Mahdi. And it makes clear the Iranians believe that time is fast approaching.

"The Hadith have clearly described the events and the various transformations of countries in the Middle East and also that of Iran in the age of the coming," said a narrator, who went on to say that America's invasion of Iraq was foretold by Islamic scripture—and that the Mahdi will one day soon rule the world.

The video describes Ahmadinejad and Iran's Supreme Ayatollah Khamenei as the leaders who will bring about his return. It condemns the United States and Israel, and offers praise to the Muslim Brotherhood for helping to overthrow the government of Hosni Mubarak in Egypt.

Read this quote from the movie and sense the rising threat of evil:

Therefore let us shout out loud that The Coming is soon and that evil should be fearful. We live with these thoughts every day and our lives are filled with The Coming of the last Imam. That human will reappear and fill the world with justice and establish his promised governance on earth. The very world has witnessed too much bloodshed of the innocent for others to build their palaces. The very world is filled with shouts for justice. The innocent and the oppressed are losing their lives to world powers. It is in this very world where the oppressors rule and this world that Allah will command the last Imam to appear and forever put an end to injustice. At that time, the world will belong to the righteous.

The leaders of Iran are willing to launch an all-out war that will lead to the deaths of millions of innocent people; it is a key step in their prophetic end-times belief. The entire world lies at risk—but their first strike will be against Israel.

This Day…

April 11: 145: Birthdate of Septimius Severus, the “Roman emperor, who according to the Virtual Jewish Library Lucious Septimus Severus treatd “Jews relatively well, allowing them to participate in public offices and be exempt from formalities contrary to Judaism. However, he did not allow the Jews to convert anyone.” [According to one source, this had to do with the fact that Severus was not really a Roman, but of Syrian-Phoenician stock, but I could find no further corroboration of this.][1]

April 11, 491: Anastasius I begins his reign as the Byzantine Emperor. The reign of Anastasius marked the renewal of warfare with the Sassanid Empire. The Sassanid Empire was the name given to the Persian Empire of the day. This renewal of warfare would have a negative impact on the Jews who ruled the island of Yotabe also known as Tiran, which is in the straits of Tiran. The Jews of Yotabe played an instrumental role in the trade along the Red Sea and when the Byzantines sought to move East to take control of this trade and defeat the Sassanids, they would replace the Jewish leaders with their own people.[2]

500 A.D. : A key figure in the development of the monastic lifestyle was St. Benedict of Inertia. In 500 A.D. Benedict left his comfortable life among the nobility and started living as a hermit in the Italian countryside. But as word spread about his special powers of healing he was forced to sacrifice his simple life of seclusion. His reputation for miracal working caused people to seak him out where ever he went. Telling the future, healing the sick, and raising the dead.[3]

Abt 500

The Christian religion was introduced in Scotland about 500 A.D. and new troubles were experienced by the converts.[4]

By the 6th century, Jews have become a minority in their own land.[5]

A sixth-century mosaic map of Jerusalem and the Judean hills.[6]

[7]

In AD 500 Teotihuacan covered over 8 square miles and home to at least 125,000 people. Residential apartment compounds, official buildings, temples, and wide avanues were all part of this densely packed city.[8]

502: Tiqhernac further states that Fergus the Second, son of Erc, held a part of Britain with the Dalriadic Kingdom and died A.D. 502; that Lochene, the son of Fingen, King of the Cruithne, or Picts, died A.D. 645; that Fearchar Fada died A.D. 697 (?); that there was a slaughter the Picts and Saxons when Findgaine, son of Deleroitb, was killed A.D. 711; that Ainbceallach, son of Fearchar Fada, was slain by his brother A.D. 719; that Finguine, sone of Drostan, and Ferot, son of Finguine, officers of King Nechtan, were slain in battle A.D. 729;[9]

511 A.D. Clovis died of an unknown cause in 511 A.D. His brutality had been legendary. But it would not define his legacy. He had united the barbarian tribes of France into one emerging superpower, the Franks. He had also forged a crucial alliance with the increasingly influencial Roman Catholic Church. In so doing he had proven to be a stabilizing force at a time when it could only be called dangerous and dark.

525 C.E. Najran was the capital of the strong Himyar kingdom, ruled by a dynasty of Judaized kings, most famously Yusuf Asar Dhu Nuwas (d. 525 CE), its last. From the early Roman period, Himyar was an active member of a vibrant trade network connecting Arabia, the Mediterranean, and the African kingdom of Axum in Ethiopia. It was certainly the most significant polity in Arabia before the rise of Islam, enough so to be at constant war with both the Ethiopians of Axum and the )Persian Empire. The effective end of this turbulent kingdom came in 550 EC, when it was conquered by a Parthian army followed by an Ethiopian invasion in 570. Several decades later, the fist Islamic messengers arrived. [10]

527 A.D. Byzantine Emperor Justin I names his nephew Justinian I as co-ruler and successor to the throne. This was a "lose-lose" proposition for the Jewish people. When Justin I assumed the throne he adopted a policy of rigorously enforcing the anti-Jewish laws promulgated by Theodosius including excluding Jews from "all posts of honor" and banning the construction of new synagogues.[11] When an ambitious Emperor Justinian came to power in 527 A.D. he had visions of a reunited Roman Empire. [12]

April 11, 1241: The Mongol army under the command Batu Khan defeated King Béla IV of Hungary at the Battle of Muhi. The defeat was a disaster for Christian forces in general and the Hungarians in particular. Bela looked favorably on his Jewish subjects, seeing them as a force that could raise his kingdom from the impoverishment resulting from the defeat. Bela adopted measures that protected his Jewish subjects from mob violence and church control and allowed them to use their own legal system for settling communal disputes. In exchange for this protection, the Jews were to pay their taxes directly to the royal treasury. Needless to say, Bela’s behavior did not meet with the approval of the clergy and they would move to overturn his rulings under his successor.[13]

1242

24 cart-loads of hand-written Talmudic manuscripts burned publicly in the streets of Paris.[14] [15]

1242: James I of Aragon orders Jews to listen to conversion sermons and to attend churches. Friars are given power to enter synagogues uninvited.[16]

April 11, 1302: A decree was issued ordering the Jews of Barcelona to kneel when meeting a priest with the sacraments.[17]

1302

Pope Boniface VIII (1294-1303) sat on the papal throne. He enriched his relatives at the expense of the Church, and both his personal relatives at the expense of the Church, and both his personal character and orthodoxy were repeatedly called into question. Philip IV, King of France, called for a council to judge Boniface on charges of “heresy, blasphemy, murder, sodomy, simony and sorcery (including consorting with a familiar spirit or pet demon), and failure to fast on fast days.” He is reputed to have claimed that “sex with boys and women was no worse than rubbing one hand against another.” A notorious libertine, he once had a married woman and her daughter as his mistresses. Even more disturbingly, he was said to have called Christ a “hypocrite,” professed to be an atheist, rejected the resurrection, and claimed the only heaven and hell were here on this earth. In 1302 Boniface issued the bull Unum Sanctum which outrageously claimed that “it is altogether necessary for salvation for every human creature to be subject to the Roman Pontiff.”[18]

April 11, 1649: The largest Auto De Fe in the New World was held with 109 victims in Mexico. All but one of them was accused of Judaizing. Thirteen were burned alive and 57 in effigy. This for the most part ended the prominence of crypto-Jews in Mexico.[19]

In 1650, Lauchlan Mackinnon raised a regiment of his clan for the services of Charles II.[20]

1650: Methodically, mercilessly, the loose coalition of New York tribes had not only defeated many surrounding tribes and subjected their people to the most diabolical tortures, they also deliberately exterminated some, such as the Erie tribe in 1648 and the Neutrals during the following year. Other tribes were simply defeated and driven out, including the heretofore powerful Hurons. That tribe, longtime inhabitants of the Niagara area and greatly revered by the other tribes, under the duress imposed upon them by the Five Nations, (Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga, Oneida and Mohawk) meekly migrated to the Michigan country in 1650. Soon afterward those same Hurons divided themselves to form yet another tribe, the Wyandots. The parent Hurons remained in Michigan, but the newly formed Wyandots planted fresh roots in the soil of the Ohio country just south of Lake Erie.[21]

April 11, 1713: The Treaty of Utrecht ends the second French and Indian War.[22]

April 11, 1713: Following today’s signing of the Peace Utrecth which marked the end of Spanish domination over Belgium Jews began to reappear in Brussels after an absence that dated back to 1370.

April 11, 1732

"Hannah VANCE, daughter of John Vance, was born in the Valley of the Shenandoah in 1732. Her father was an early settler there, and was surveyor. One of his principle assistants was William Crawford, the youthful companion of Washington, and it was through this circumstance that the daughter and the young surveyor became acquainted and subsequently married...When Crawford, in 1767, fixed his home upon the banks of the Youghiogheny...Mrs. Crawford was no less widely known for that generous hospitality so dearly appreciated by pioneers in search of homes in the wilderness, and so of all the women on the frontiers of Western Penn., none were more highly respected and lovingly remembered. During the years when her brave husband was serving his country faithfully as an officer in the struggle for independence, Mrs. Crawford kept faithful watch and ward over the younger members of her family, and to her they were largely indebted for their education, and what measure of life they entered upon. ...The depredations of the Ohio Indians on the frontiers of Penn. called loudly for redress...the melancholy story of Crawford and his men live in kindly memory....none was more to be commiserated than the wife of the unfortunate commander. Hannah Vance Crawford had parted from her husband with a heavy heart. ..Her lonely cabin by the Youghiogheny was a house of mourning now...The widow was left in embarrassment as to property...estate was swept away, most of it by a flood of claims, some having no just foundation. ...the

State of Penn. afterwards reimbursed his estate. Mrs. Crawford

drew a pension from the State on account of the military service

of her husband; but Congress seems to have turned a deaf ear to

her application for relief, deeming, no doubt, the Penn. pittance

as ample. It is related by a grandson that when he was a little

boy his grandmother took him behind her on horseback, rode

across the Youghiogheny, turned to the left into the woods when

they both alighted by an old moss-covered white oak log. "Here,"

said the good old lady, as she sat down upon the log and cried as

though her hear would break, "here I parted with your

grandfather!" Mrs. Crawford lived at her old home where she had

resided nearly fifty years, until her death n 1817. The mournful

fate of her husband saddened her declining years, for like one

of old she would not be comforted, because he was not. Portions

of the above text appear verbatim in Egle's Penn. Women in the

Rev., pp.58-61. The following portions of that account do not

appear in the preceding version: William Crawford, son of

Valentine Crawford - please see William Crawford notes, H.S.

April 11, 1788: Alexander Vance held one of the 4 land warrants issued for Tyrone County (his was issued April 3,1769, but not surveyed till April 11,1788). John Vance, Moses' father settled on a tract of land in 1766. John Vance (d. 1772) "who's ancestors came from Scotland and Ireland, was a native of Virginia". He came to PA with his sister's husband Col. William Crawford. John was already married to his wife Margaret White before he left VA. John died young leaving his wife Margaret to raise their 6 children, David, William, Moses, Jane, Elizabeth, and Maria. "Among the records of property is one where, under date of January 10, 1781, Margaret Vance, widow of John Vance, reported the list of her registered slaves, - one female, named Priscilla, aged twenty-seven years, and two males, Harry and Daniel, aged respectively seven and three years.

Priscilla and Harry afterwards became the property of the daughter, Jane Vance who was married to Benjamin Whalley. The son David (Vance) settled in Kentucky, and William (Vance) remained on the old place until middle life, when he died, never having married. Moses Vance also stayed upon the homestead, and when, in 1790, the land upon which his father's family had lived so long was warrented to Benjamin Whalley, two hundred and fifty acres of it was transferred to him and upon that he resided until his death.

Moses Vance's wife was Elizabeth, a daughter of Jacob Strickler, and they reared a family of seven sons and two daughters, John, Jacob, Samuel, Francis, William, Crawford, George, Margaret, and Eliza. John still lives on the old Gamer place, Jacob is in Lower Tyrone, and William's home is in Connellsville. Before leaving his native town, Tyrone, William held the office of justice of the peace for some years. George Vance removed to Illinois, and Samuel, Francis, Crawford, and Margaret are dead." [23][24]

April 11, 1778

The diarists also recorded information in 1778 concerning Americans who were prisoners of war. The von Mirbach regimental order book entry for April 11, 1778 contains the following information. “A large number of rebels escaped from the sugar house prison [in New York] during the night, two of whom were captured by Major von Wilmowsky’s Company, which meets with General Robertson’s approval and he has ordered that a reward be paid to the troops who made the arrest. All the pickets and guards will be alert to watch for suspicious persons in order to perhaps catch some more of these deserters.”[25]

“Fort PITT, April 11, 1782.

“To MAJOR Scott, Washington Militia.”

John Eels, the Indian, was executed for “an intention of making his escape to, and joining the enemy, and also trying to prevail on others to do the same,” as will appear from the following record of General Irvine’s orders inquiring into the guilt or innocence of the accused.[26]

[28] The correct answer to Major Wright’s question is readily given. His was only one of a number of brave Iowa regiments which lost heavily in that ill-fated expedition, through utter incapacity of the Commading General, Nathaniel P. Banks. The verdict of all historians is unanimous with reference to the Red River Expedition and its commander. Both were stupendous failures. Major Wright displayed great skill and ability in being able to extricate his command from it perilous situation, with a loss of little less than the number engaged. While the loss was heavy, it is marvelous that, under the circumstances, it was not much greater. Had the other five companies of the regiment engaged, the loss would have been proportionately greater. It was therefore fortunate that they were on detached duty.

Upon the return of the regiment to Pleasant Hill, Major Wright was placed in command of the brigade and Captain Martin assumed command of the regiment. The Third and Fourth Divisions of the Thirteenth Corps, under command of General Cameron. (General Ransom having been severely wounded,) were ordered to take charge of the train and proceed to Grand Ecore, on Red River. Here the command arrived, on the evening of the 11th, and began the construction of fortifications; Lieutenant Colonel Wilson, of the Twenty…Iowa, Succeeding Major Wright as brigade commander.
