Birthday’s: Kristin M. Bindi Mahoney 21, Lucy Emma Spiers Winch 141, Forrest C. Godlove 115, Mathew M. Hosford 26,

January 11, 347 AD: Birthdate of Theodosius I the last emperor to rule both the western and eastern portion of the Roman Empire. As powerful as Theodosius may appeared to be, he was no match for the rising power of the Christian church leaders. When a bishop had incited a group of his followers to burn down a synagogue, Theodosius ordered the bishop to pay for re-building the Jewish house of worship. But Ambrose, the Bishop of Milan, overruled the Emperor contending, according to one source, that Christian money should not be used to pay for Jewish things. [1]

Fourth Century: Saint John Chrysostom, a fourth century Bishop of Antioch, was known as one of the most eloquent preachers of truth and love. However, in a series of eight sermons against the Jews, he wrote: “The synagogue is a criminal assembly of Jews…a place of meeting for the assassins of Christ. Jews are inveterate murderers, possessed by the devil, their debauchery and drunkenness gives them the manners of the pig.”[2]

January 1155: Theobald in 1154 named Becket Archdeacon of Canterbury, and other ecclesiastical offices included a number of benefices, prebends at Lincoln Cathedral and St Paul's Cathedral, and the office of Provost of Beverley. His efficiency in those posts led to Theobald recommending him to King Henry II for the vacant post of Lord Chancellor,[1] to which Becket was appointed in January 1155.[7]

As Chancellor, Becket enforced the king’s traditional sources of revenue that were exacted from all landowners, including churches and bishoprics.[1] King Henry even sent his son Henry to live in Becket's household, it being the custom then for noble children to be fostered out to other noble houses. The younger Henry was reported to have said Becket showed him more fatherly love in a day than his father did for his entire life. An emotional attachment to Becket as a foster-father may have been one of the reasons the younger Henry would turn against his father.[3]

January 11, 1313: The Council of Zamora (Spain) made a ruling which was allegedly based on a ruling by Pope Clement V, in which he allowed the Christians to legally deny accruing any interest on loans from Jews.[4]

1314: Although it is on certain record that ancestor and chief of the MacKinnon’s was seized of property in Skye as well as in the Isle of Mull as early as A. D. 880, we have no authentic account of the history of the clan till we reach A. D. 1314, when the clan MacKinnon fought under the great Bruce at the battle of Bannockburn.[5] Before that decisive action was fought, Robert Bruce had retired to Arran, where the MacKinnons at that period possessed some land, and it was here that he met with protection from his faithful vassals, numbers of whom (amongst them the MacKinnons) followed his misfortunes; and, after the battle of Bannockburn, he rewarded several of them, amongst them the chief of MacKinnon, with a new charter of lands in his native Isle of Skye. At that period the family held estates in Mull, Arran, Skye, Tiree, as well as in the shires of Perth and Ross, properties acquired partly by excambion and otherwise from the following circumstance. The heir of the chief of the MacKinnons was sent from Mull to be fostered by Gillies, who then possessed Strath. This person had an only son and a nephew, who, being on a hunting expedition to Pabbay, unfortunately quarreled, and in the contest both were slain, when old Gillies, being without heirs, became attached to young MacKinnon and left him his patrimonial estates. The chief seats were at Earey, on the property in Mull, at Kilmorie, the fine situation of which is described by Pennant, the tourist, and MacKinnon Castle, on the south-eastern coast of Skye. They originally possessed the district of Griban in Mull, but exchanged it for the district of Mishnish, being that part of Mull immediately to the west and north of Tobermory.[6] A large contingent of Templars were found at Bannockburn in 1314. Afterwards they (Templars) were also prominant in Lorne and Argyll. From the time of Robert the Bruce, each successive Bruce and Stewart heir was reputed to be Knights Templar from birth. One must remember that this was part and parcel of many genealogical claims made in the past. [7]

Death of Philip IV the Fair – succeeded by three sons Louis X Philip V and Charles IV, death of Pope Clement V – vacancy for two years, double election of Frederick of Austria and Louis of Bavaria, Jacques de Molay Grand Master of the Templars burned at the stake in Paris for alleged heresy, Completion of old St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, Dante begins Divine Comedy in Italy, death of Philip IV the Fair King of France – Louis X the Quarrelsome rules to 1316, death of Pope Clement V, Louis IV HRE to 1347 in civil war with rival Frederick of Austria, Pope Clement V dies, no Pope until 1316, War between Wittelsbachs and Habsburgs ends with victory for Louis IV of Wittelsbach. 1699
(1699) Ancestor Christopher Smith was imported to Virginia in 1699 as an indentured servant to Mr Gilbert Livesay aboard the Elizabeth from Liverpool. There were as many as five contemporary Christopher Smiths. It seems unlikely that Christopher was indentured and then Clerk of the Vestry five years later.[15]

1699: Ancestor John Vance was born in 1699, the s/o Andrew Vance b. 1670, and Elizabeth "Colvin" Vance . He later married Elizabeth "LNU" b. abt. 1700.[16]

1699
Priests of the Quebec Seminary of Foreign Missions found the Holy Family mission with the Tamaroa Indians at Cahokia, the first permanent settlement in the Illinois country.[17][18]

1699: In Werneck in the 17th/18th century , four to five Jewish families in the town were average: 1699 four families (families of Anton, Amsell, Jacob, and Joseph, along with women, children, and service servants/-boten 26 persons),[19] 1699 live Jews ISACC and Moyses in Ettleben Jud Jacob and his family, in Schraudenbach with their families.[20]

At this same court "it is ordered that ... appraise her estate ... in Orange County, Geo. Taylor, Erasmus Taylor, Ruben Daniel & Andrew2 Harrison...." [22]

January 11, 1755: Birthdate of Alexander Hamilton, aide to General George Washington, ardent Federalist and the 1st United States Secretary of the Treasury. Hamilton was in Charleston, a city on Nevis, an island in the West Indies. He was the son of James A. Hamilton and Rachel Facucett Lavien. Although the facts are a little murky, it would appear that Hamilton’s mother was Jewish. She had left her husband, Johann Michael Lavien, a Jewish planter before she began her affair with Hamilton was a married man. Since Hamilton was born out of wedlock, he could not go to school at the school run by the Church of England. Instead he attended classes at a Jewish private school. If Hamilton’s mother was indeed Jewish and not just a woman married to a Jew, he would be Jewish according to Halachah. Hamilton never identified himself as a Jew and lived his life in New York as a Christian.[23]

January 11, 1775: Francis Salvador is elected to South Carolina’s Provincial Congress, becoming the first Jew to hold elective office in America.[24]

January 11, 1855:

Jeff

I have found only three Godlove families in 19th century U. S. The earliest and largest group is the descendants of Franz Gottlob. The other two are descendants of Emanuel (1818-1882) and of Moses (ca. 1832-1897). There were 524 Gottliebs and 47 Gottlobs who entered the country through Castle Garden in NY in the 19th century (I have not researched other ports of entry) but only these three families must Anglicized their name. Moses of St. Louis might be the 22-year old Moses Gottlieb who arrived January 11,1855 at Castle Island. The origin given for him is only Germany.

You say Werneck "was a Jewish community." Does that mean a village in which all the residents were Jews or that there was a Jewish community in Werneck? What sources would you recommend to me to learn more about Werneck?

One of your birthdays for December 22 was for Margaret Grant. Who is that? It caught my attention because you mention Judge Didawick's letter in the same post. His wife's name was Margaret Grant. Jacob was 83 when he wrote the letter to Annie Cline, and he was living with his daughter's family in St. Louis after nearly 60 years in Montana. Jim

Jim, Thanks for the Godlove info. I got the info on Werneck on a German websight and translated in using babble fish. Werneck had a Jewish community including synagogue but was not only Jewish. I will find that website tonight. The Grant you asked about is Margaret Gertrude Grant Born December 22, 1917 in St. Thomas, Elgin, Ontario, Canada. died Jun 18, 1980. Married Earl Wiliam Durham. January 11, 1944: After humiliating defeats in Greece and North Africa, Ciano began arguing for a peace agreement with the Allies. Mussolini considered this defeatist--and dismissed him as foreign minister, taking control of that office himself. Ciano became ambassador to the Vatican until he and other members of the Grand Council finally pushed Mussolini out of power in July 1943. Mussolini never forgave his son-in-law for what he later considered a betrayal. Ciano soon fled Rome for the north when the new provisional government began preparing charges of embezzlement against him. Ciano unwittingly fled into the arms of pro-fascist forces in northern Italy and was charged with treason. He was executed on January 11, 1944 on his father-in-law's orders--Mussolini was installed in a puppet government that had been set up by the Germans. Ciano's diaries, which contained brutally frank and sardonic commentaries on the personalities of the war era, are considered an invaluable part of the historical record.[39]

January 11, 1978: Iran lifted its trade boycott on Italy and Denmark imposed for attacks on Iranian missions in both countries.[42]
