Vandals destroy Jewish pogrom memorial in Poland

It was the latest in a recent series of racist and xenophobic acts of vandalism targeting the small Jewish and Muslim communities.
Talkbacks ()
WARSAW - Vandals destroyed a monument to victims of a World War Two pogrom against Jews in Poland, covering it with racist inscriptions and swastikas in green paint, police said on Thursday.
It was the latest in a recent series of racist and xenophobic acts of vandalism targeting the small Jewish and Muslim communities in eastern Poland as well as the tiny Lithuanian minority.
At least 340 Jews were burned alive by their Polish neighbors in a barn in the 1941 pogrom in the eastern town of Jedwabne. The site was later turned into a memorial.
"On Wednesday a police patrol ran into the devastated site. We immediately started an investigation," said Andrzej Baranowski, police spokesman in the nearby city of Bialystok.
Vandals also smeared a wall surrounding the memorial with signs saying "I'm not sorry for Jedwabne" and "They were highly flammable". They obscured the Hebrew and Polish signs on the memorial itself with paint.
"This is a perfect example of vandalism and stupidity, but we don't know the exact motives yet," Baranowski added.
All the recent anti-Semitic and xenophobic incidents were probably perpetrated by the same people, Poland's interior ministry said this week, and they are all under investigation by the Bialystok police.
A 2001 Polish investigation concluded that the Jedwabne pogrom was inspired by Poland's then-Nazi occupiers and the case remains a traumatic memory for Jews and many Poles today.
Poland was home to Europe's largest Jewish population of some 2.5 million until World War Two, when most of its Jewish citizens perished in the Nazi-sponsored Holocaust.
The few who survived the war faced periodic oppression by the communist regime installed in Poland after 1945.
Poland is a largely homogeneous Roman Catholic country but religious and ethnic minorities are more common in eastern regions near the borders with Belarus and Ukraine. [1]

Palestinian Dream, Israeli Nightmare
Dear Jeffery,
With less than three weeks left until the UN meets in New York City, Palestinian President Abbas continues his campaign for world recognition. “We want to fulfill our dream of achieving official recognition of our Palestinian state with full sovereignty over the territories occupied in 1967 and a full membership in the UN,” Abbas said to a group of Muslim religious leaders. “We want to put an end to the occupation.”
The PA president also offered to skip asking the UN for recognition if Israel would agree to retreat to the 1967 borders and stop all construction in Jerusalem—demands that would be suicidal if accepted. Today Israel has few friends and many enemies. As the world prepares to vote to hand over Jerusalem to the terrorists who have spent decades killing every Jew they can (Abbas provided the funding for the Black September attack on Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympics, but claims he didn’t know what the money was for!), those of us who believe the Scriptures must stand with the Chosen People. We need a miracle—but God is in the miracle business!
Your ambassador to Jerusalem,
Dr. Michael Evans
September 1, 1267: Ramban (Moses Nachmanides or Moses ben Nachman) arrived in Jerusalem. Born in 1194, Nachmanides was a famed commentator on the Torah and Talmud and a major communal leader in Spain. He also was the court physician to King James of Aragon (a part of Spain). King James forced him to defend Judaism in a public debate with Pablo Christiani, a Jew who had converted to Catholicism. To make a long story short, Nachmendides vigorous defense angered the Dominican friars and Nahcdmendides was forced to flee. He gave life to a Jewish community in Jerusalem that had fallen on suchhard times that it had trouble gathering a minyan. Among other things he built a synagogue in Jerusalem that was the sole such building for several centuries to come. Nachmanides moved to Acre in 1268 where he led that community until 1270.[2]
September 1, 1577: Pope Gregory XIII, reconfirming the Bull of Pope Nicholas II, decreed that one hundred and fifty Jews must hear conversion sermons in Rome every week. He reissued a similar Bull a few years later in 1584.[3]
1578: In A.D. 1578, (temp. James VI.) an order from the Privy Council was sent to Donald MacKinnon of Strathordell, probably a brother of the Chief as well as to MacLean of Duart, forbidding them to assist Colin, sixth Earl of Argyle in an expedition against the Laird of Glengarry. These decided measures seem to have checked the Earl's proceedings.[4]
September 1, 1592: Harsh persecution began with Archbishop Salikowski ordering the Jews to build a church in Lvov, Poland.[5]
1593 Jews expelled from Brandenburg, Austria.[6]

• September 1, 1614: Vincent Fettmich expelled Jews from Frankfort-on-Main, Germany[1][2][7][8]

1615 Jews expelled from Worms.[9]

At Coashoskin Mr. Anderson found his horse. Saw an Indian dance in which I bore a part. Painted by my Squaw in the most elegant manner. Divested of all my clothes except my Calico short breech cloth, leggings, and Mockesons, A fire was made which we danced round with little order, whooping and halooing in a most frightful manner. I was but a novice at the diversion and by endeavouring to act as they did made them a great dea1 of sport and integrated me much in their esteem. This is the most violent exercise to the adepts in the art I ever saw. No regular figure, but violent distortion of features, writhing and twisting the body in the most uncouth and antic postures imaginable. Their music is an old Keg with one head knocked out and covered with a skin and beat with sticks which regulates their times. The men have strings of Deer’s hoofs tied round their ankles and knees, and gourds with shot or pebbestones in them in their hands which they continually rattle. . The women have Morris bells or Thimbles with holes in the bottom and strung upon a leather thong tied to and their ankles, knees and waists.
The jingling of these Bells and Thimbles, the rattling of the Deer’s hoofs and gourds, beating of the drum and kettle, with the horrid yells of the Indians, render it the most unharmonious concert, that human idea can possibly conceive It is a favourite diversion, in which I am informed they spend a great . part of their time in Winter. Saw an Indian Conjuror dressed in a Coat of Bearskin with Visor mask made of wood, frightful enough to scare the Devil. The Indians believe in conjuration and Witchcraft. Left the Town, went about two miles. Camped by the side run. . A young Indian boy, son of one Baubee a Frenchman, came after us and insists on going with us to Fort Pitt. Find myself very unwell this evening, pains in my head and back, Nancy seems very uneasy about my welfare. Afraid of the Ague.[10]

On the first of September Gen. Knyphausen, crossed over to Cecil Court House, whence he proceeded on the east side and joined the forces under Howe on the third of the month. Gen. Grant remained at the head of Elk to maintain the communication with the shipping.
As soon as Gen. Washington had learned the preparations for departure made in New York by the British troops, he took position at Morristown, N. 3., whence he could command the highland on the Hudson and oppose any renewed attempt to cross New Jersey towards Philadelphia.
The time consumed in the embarkation indicated a longer voyage than the ascent of the Hudson. Accordingly, whilst preparations to receive the enemy on that river and to the eastward were not neglected, the completion of the fortifications upon the Delaware was hastened, and the militia of the lower counties of Pennsylvaia and the state of Delaware was assembled at Chester and Wilmington.
The departure of the fleet was the signal for the march of the American troops to the southward. Gen. Stephen, with his division and that of Gen. Lincoln proceeded to Chester, Gen. Lincoln having been ordered to join Gen. Schuyler in the North. The divisions of Generals Sullivan and Sterling, with that of Gen. Greene, (composed of the brigades of Muhlenberg and Weedon) slowly approached, accompanied by Gen. Washington in person. Morgan’s and Bland’s regiments of horse were with them. Gen. Nash received orders, upon receipt of intelligence of the fleets being off the capes of the Chesapeake, to embark with Proctors artillery for Chester.[11]

• Dear Jeff - Greetings - I was just reading the daily production - August 14 - and noted that inthe information about Conrad Goodlove coming to Iwa in l855 ( or l854 ) The age of William Harrison Goodlove is listed as " 28 " This may be just a typing error. As I understand W.H. was born in l836 in Ohio and died at the age of 80 in l9l6 in Central City Iowa Thanks again for all those daily productions . Are your parents still alive ??
• As Ever Al Bowdish
• Al, Thanks for keeping an eye on things in "This Day". I also have William Harrison Goodlove, born October 22, 1836, and coming to Iowa in 1855 he would have been 28 or 29, depending on whether he arrived before his birth date. My father apparently thinks that he did in his book "Conrad and Caty". I was just thinking that William Harrison Goodlove has probably been mentioned in every blog I have ever written, including today's "This Day". As for my parents, my mom is still in the vegetable business and helping Jennifer with "The Farmers Daughter Market." My dad is recovering from a double hernia operation and is doing well. I fax "This Day" to him every day as he still is not doing the email thing yet. I hope all is well with you. Jeff Goodlove
