Turkey warns of more sanctions against Israel

SELCAN HACAOGLU | September 6, 2011 06:35 AM EST |

ANKARA, Turkey — Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Tuesday that his government may impose more sanctions against Israel since it has refused to apologize for last year's deadly raid on a Gaza-bound protest flotilla, and he accused Israel of acting like the region's "spoiled boy."

Turkey already has suspended military ties with Israel, ordered its top diplomats out of the country by Wednesday and promised to lobby other nations to support a plan by Palestinians to seek recognition as a state at an annual meeting of the U.N. General Assembly later this month.

Erdogan did not say what the next round of sanctions could include.

Turkey last week told Israel to downgrade its diplomatic mission to the level of second-secretary while suspending military deals in response to Israel's refusal to apologize for the botched Israeli raid on the Gaza-bound protest flotilla, which killed nine Turkish pro-Palestinian activists last year. Israel has expressed regret for the loss of lives.

A U.N. report released last week called the Israeli raid "excessive and unreasonable," but also said Turkey and flotilla organizers contributed to the deaths.

"That report does not mean anything for us," Erdogan said Monday. "We will determinedly maintain this process. Diplomatic relations will be downgraded as of tomorrow, trade relations, military relations have been suspended."

Turkey did not imposed a trade embargo on Israel but suspended ongoing defense projects and purchases from Israeli defense firms.

Israel suspends demolition of Palestinian homes

AMY TEIBEL | September 6, 2011 05:22 AM EST |

JERUSALEM — An Israeli defense official says the military is temporarily suspending its contentious policy of demolishing illegally built Palestinian homes in the West Bank.

The official says the head of the territory's military administration issued this order after determining the policy is not equally enforced against illegally built Jewish settler homes.

The Palestinians have bitterly complained that demolitions are arbitrary and lopsided and that it's difficult for them to get Israeli construction permits.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the order, which was issued in an internal memorandum. He didn't say how long the order would last.

A statement from the military administration says it's committed to equal enforcement.[1]

Jerusalem police find suicide vests; State Department issues warning

Dear Jeffery,

As we celebrate Labor Day in America, the Jerusalem police are on high alert. The recent discovery of three suicide vests in the Holy City, apparently placed there for use in yet another attack on the Chosen People, proves there is no sign of a letup in the increased terror campaign by Israel’s enemies. Things have gotten so bad that the State Department has issued an advisory warning of the danger.

Your ambassador to Jerusalem,

Dr. Michael Evans

September 6, 394: The Christian Roman Emperor Theodosius I defeats and kills the pagan usurper Eugenius at the Battle of the Frigidus. This marked the final triumph of Christendom in the Roman Empire. The pagans, including those found among the Roman nobility could and did convert. For the Jews, it was a different matter. In one of those strange twists of fate, the victory actually helped to weaken the Empire and led to a further of the split between the Western and Eastern empires.[2]

Palmer Report: Israel Vindicated, Media Shrugs
September 5, 2011 12:56 by Simon Plosker

The UN’s Palmer Report into the events of the first Gaza flotilla in 2010 came to a number of important conclusions that, in the main vindicated Israel’s positions:

Israel’s naval blockade of Gaza is legal and Israel has the right to enforce the blockade, including in international waters.
The decision to breach the naval blockade was a dangerous and reckless act which needlessly carried the potential for escalation.
The conduct and true objectives of the flotilla organizers, particularly the IHH, included plans to violently resist any boarding attempt.
The Israeli Government adopted the Report albeit with reservations concerning the characterization of Israel’s decision to board the vessels in the manner it did as “excessive and unreasonable” as well as alleged mistreatment of some flotilla participants following the docking of vessels in Israel.

But what did the media choose to focus on and emphasize with the publication of the Palmer Report? A grudging acknowledgment that Israel did indeed have a valid case?

Horrendous Headlines
Not judging by these headlines, which made it clear which way the story was framed:

Washington Post

The Independent

Daily Telegraph

Wall Street Journal

In addition, this Sky News headline also makes it abundantly clear who the guilty party is considered to be:

Sky News

A Different Standard for Israel
Joseph Ciechanover, Israel’s representative on the Palmer Panel, stated that:

Their [the Panel members'] efforts should send a message to the international community about the need to engage with all sides to a dispute and to avoid prejudging an incident before all of the facts are known.

This certainly applies to much of the international media that unleashed a maelstrom of vicious reporting, working on the assumption that Israel was the perpetrator and turning Israel into a virtual pariah at the time of the incident.

Think back to the media coverage of the flotilla and the UN’s Goldstone Report, which also generated a wave of anti-Israel sentiment in the media and beyond. So why then is a UN report that, in the main, supports Israeli policies not deemed equally newsworthy? After all, these days, anything positive concerning Israel, particularly from a problematic body such as the UN is news in itself.[3]
