Israel clears out embassy staff in Jordan

AMY TEIBEL | September 15, 2011 06:18 AM EST |

JERUSALEM — Nearly all the staff have been cleared out of the Israeli embassy in the Jordanian capital ahead of an anti-Israel protest in Amman on Thursday, for fear the mission could be attacked like the Israeli embassy in Cairo was last week, Israeli newspapers and radio stations reported.

A convoy transporting the Israeli diplomats left Jordan for Israel overnight, the Haaretz newspaper said.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry wouldn't comment on the reports, other than to say that embassy personnel generally leave Jordan on Thursdays ahead of the Muslim weekend. It said a duty representative remained on call in Amman, as is routine procedure.

Activists in Jordan have called for a "million-man march" against the Israeli mission, part of a rising tide of anti-Israel protests there and in Egypt, the two Arab countries that have made peace with the Jewish state.

The Jordanian protesters – led by leftists, labor unions and Islamists – are expected to start gathering near the embassy by 1400 GMT. Their demands include the embassy's closure, expulsion of the ambassador from Jordan and the annulment of the 1994 peace treaty with Israel.

Nearly half of Jordan's 6 million residents are of Palestinian descent. With Palestinian-Israeli peace talks stalled, some Jordanians fear Israel may try to substitute Jordan for a Palestinian state – a concept that has little support in Israel.

At the embassy in Amman, about two dozen Jordanian visa applicants waited outside the fortified building as armed Jordanian policemen and Israeli security stood on guard Thursday morning.

The Israeli flag flew atop the embassy's white-stoned building on a hill in Amman's upscale Rabiyeh district. No extra security measures were visible – two roadblocks leading to the embassy were still in place, as were about a dozen armed Jordanian police patrols.

Anti-Israel sentiment is mounting at a volatile diplomatic time for Israel and its Muslim allies.

The Palestinians plan to ask the United Nations next week to endorse an independent Palestinian state, over Israeli and U.S. opposition.

There is also growing friction with Turkey, which recalled its ambassador to Israel after Israel refused to apologize for the deaths of nine Turks in a deadly Israeli military raid on a Gaza-bound flotilla last year.

Ties with Egypt have been strained by the ransacking of the Israeli embassy in Cairo on Friday and the killing of six Egyptian soldiers last month. The deaths occurred as Israeli troops pursued militants who had crossed from Egypt into southern Israel and attacked vehicles near the border, killing eight Israelis.

And in a rare anti-American demonstration in U.S.-ally Jordan, protesters on Wednesday demanded the closing of the U.S. Embassy in Amman over WikiLeaks cables suggesting covert American plans to turn Jordan into a home for Palestinians.

About 70 activists burned American and Israeli flags in a noisy protest across from the U.S. Embassy in Amman and chanted: "The people want the Americans out."[1]

[edit] Biography
[edit] Personal Life and Faith Development
Michael David Evans was born in Springfield,Massachusetts June 30, 1947 to a non-practicing Jewish mother whose parents were immigrants from the Soviet Union. Following his discharge from the United States Army, Evans moved to Texas where he earned an Associate of Arts degree from Southwestern Assemblies of God College. He speaks of early life as abusive and painful at the hands of a troubled alcoholic father.

At age 11, he had what he describes as a dramatic encounter with Jesus Christ, during which he received assurance of God’s love for him and a promise that he would be used by God. Evans says his Jewish roots have given him a special appreciation for the people of Israel and have caused him to spearhead many ministries in support of Jews and Israel.

Mike Evans’ wife Carolyn is the founder of Christian Woman of the Year Association. Mother Teresa, Elizabeth Dole, Ruth Graham, Shirley Dobson, Dede Robertson, Dodie Osteen, and other distinguished women are among those honored during the past twenty years.

Mike and Carolyn Evans have four children, Michelle, Shira, Rachel and Michael II, and seven grandchildren.

[edit] Journalist
Evans is a member of the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. For more than three decades he has covered strategic events worldwide, such as the Middle East Peace Conference[15][16] in Madrid and the 43rd General Assembly of the United Nations’ specially convened session in Geneva. He most recently covered the International UN Conference on Afghanistan[17] in The Hague, Netherlands, and the Durban Review Conference[18] in Geneva, Switzerland.

Evans arranged an exclusive interview on Fox News Network with Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad during the 65th U.N. General Assembly in New York City in September 2010. The interview, conducted by Eric Shawn of Fox News, can be viewed here.

On July 13, 2007, Evans appeared on MSNBC debating with Arianna Huffington and Pat Buchannan while discussing his book, The Final Move Beyond Iraq. The discussion can be viewed here.

He also appeared on MSNBC with Tucker Carlson to discuss Iran’s aggression toward Israel and the West. That video can be viewed here.

[edit] Documentary Producer
Mike Evans has produced 18 documentaries based on his books about Israel—many of which have won him Excellence in Media (EIM) Angel Awards. EIM is a California-based 501(c) 3 non-profit organization describing itself as dedicated to quality family-oriented programming in all facets of communication. Others who have received EIM Angel Awards include Tom Hanks, Tom Poston, Jane Seymour, Red Buttons and many other notable celebrities.

His best-known production, Let My People Go, was written in 1988. It spotlighted Natan Sharansky Natan Sharansky, who was convicted of spying for the U.S. and imprisoned for nine years in a Soviet Concentration Camp known as the Gulag, where physical and mental torture, as well as sexual abuse, occurred on a regular basis.

Evans joined with other activists, including Sharansky’s wife, Avital, with assistance from East German lawyer Wolfgang Vogel, New York Congressman Benjamin Gilman and Rabbi Ronald Greenwald, asking President Ronald Reagan for Mr. Sharansky’s release as well as the release of nearly 400 Jewish prisoners from President Mikhail Gorbachev. Sharansky was the first political prisoner ever released by Mikhail Gorbachev due to intense political pressure from Ronald Reagan and his administration.

Mike Evans also worked with a Dutch government official to encourage the opening of the doors of the Dutch Embassy in Moscow to the Jews of Russia.

[edit] The ten Boom Fellowship
Mike Evans purchased and restored the Corrie ten Boom house in 1983. The Corrie ten Boom Fellowship is a non-profit 501(c) 3 corporation governed by a board of directors. It gains no direct or indirect funding from the State of Israel, nor do any of Evans’ organizations. He has served as the chairman without salary for decades.

The museum is housed in the former home of Casper ten Boom and is dedicated to telling the story of his family which harbored, fed and found safe houses for as many as 800 Jews during the Nazi takeover of Holland during World War II. The museum can also be viewed online in 20 languages.

Ten Boom family members were eventually betrayed by informants and were sent to concentration camps where most died, except Corrie ten Boom, who went on to tell the story of the family’s work with the Resistance movement. Her autobiographical book, The Hiding Place, was published in 1971 and made into a full-length feature film of the same name in 1975 and starred Jeannette Clift and Julie Harris.

Upon purchasing and restoring the house, Mike Evans created the Corrie ten Boom Fellowship,[19] an organization that follows in the tradition of the ten Boom family by continuing to pray for the peace of Jerusalem. The Fellowship also encourages Christians to exercise their faith by helping the Jewish people, praying for them and for the peace of Jerusalem in accord with the scriptural mandate in Psalm 122:6.

[edit] Jerusalem Prayer Team
Mike Evans began the Jerusalem Prayer Team in 2002 to unite people in intercessory prayer for Israel and to develop a platform from which to speak out to world leaders at UN conferences, peace summits, etc., on behalf of Israel.

Mike Evans meets with Menachem Begin.

From that platform Evans has met with dozens of heads of state, including Barzani from Kurdistan, President Cristiani of El Salvador, the president of Philippines, President Musevani of Uganda, as well as many foreign ministers, ambassadors, prime ministers and kings. He has worked closely with Israel’s prime ministers for three decades. As an advisor to Prime Minister Menachem Begin, he recommended Benjamin Netanyahu for his first government post. His recommendation followed a meeting with the future prime minister after his brother, Jonathan, had been shot in the back while leading the raid on Entebbe in Uganda. Benjamin Netanyahu is now serving his second term as prime minister of Israel.

The Prayer Team also raises funds to meet humanitarian needs of the Jewish people in Israel providing coats, blankets and home repairs for those in need. The ministry has a website that includes articles about the people of Israel, the problems being faced by her leaders and other pertinent topics.

Members are also invited to post their prayers for Israel and the Jewish people on “prayer walls” that are actually web pages with hundreds of prayers uploaded by people all over the world. The prayer walls are open to all—not just members of the prayer team.

More than 300 national Christian leaders, including Pat Robertson, Tim LaHaye, Joel Osteen and John Maxwell are supporters of the Jerusalem Prayer Team. It receives no funding from the State of Israel and its official statement says it "believes that God loves Arabs in the Bible as much as the Jews." Press Release, January 2009

[edit] Author
Evans has written extensively on the Middle East, Christian Living, Prophecy and Iraq. His works include 37 fiction and non-fiction books. The 2010 novel, titled GAMECHANGER is a fictional work set in the U.S. that suggests how the next extremist terrorist attack could bring America to a standstill, potentially changing the way we live forever.

Evans has also documented how concessions made during earlier administrations have led to the great peril of the Jewish people in his book, Jimmy Carter: The Liberal Left and World Chaos. His book, Atomic Iran, pinpoints the ways Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has planned to "wipe Israel off the map." Evans shows how recent activity by the President and his allies in the Middle East poses a significant threat to Israel and Jews everywhere.

A complete bibliography of all Mike Evans' published books is below.

September 15, 53 CE: Trajan, born September 15, 53 CE was Roman emperor from 98 until his death of 117. In the last decade of his rule, Trajan began a campaign against the Parthians, a people living east of the Roman Empire. Since this territory bordered Judea with its large Jewish population, Trajan sought to improve relations between Rome and his Jewish subjects. There were even reports that Trajan would allow a rebuilding of the Temple. However, as the Romans moved into Parthia, he met stiff military opposition, fueled in part, by Jews living in Parthia who despised Rome for destroying the Temple. At the same time, Jews in Egypt also rebelled against Rome. The violence there forced Trajan to send legions to the land along the Nile which weakened his already doomed campaign against Parthia.[2]

From 53 and 57 A.D.

Paul begins his return to Jerusalem. Paul returned to Antioch and then embarked on his third missionary journey, which began in 53 A.D. and ended in 57 A.D. Acts 18:18-19:41.[3]

54 A.D. to 66 A.D.

Lake Tiberias came under the jurisdiction of Agrippa II between 54 A.D. and 66 A.D.[4]

54-68 A.D.

Agrippina tightly controlled Nero (A.D. 54.68) until he finally had her clubbed to death at the urging of his mistress Poppaea, who began to rule behind the scenes.[5]

55: Tiberius Claudius Caesar Britannicus, heir to the Roman Emperorship, dies under mysterious circumstances in Rome clearing the way for Nero to become Emperor Would things have been better or worse if Britannicus had ruled instead of Nero? Nobody can say for sure since there is no record of his views on the Jewish people, Judea or Jerusalem. . Nero’s record regarding the Jews is a mixed bag (at least he did blame them for burning down Rome), he did appoint four inept governors to rule over Judea and appointed Vespasian to put down the Jewish Revolt when it began in 66. Given the rest of Nero’s behavior, the world (including the Jewish world) would have been better off with Britannicus.[6]

55 and 56 A.D.

Toward the end of his stay in Ephesus (55-56 A.D.), Paul wrote the letter now known as 1 Corinthians to the Corinthian church. However, this was not Paul’s first letter to the Corinthian church. (5:9) In the course of history the first letter was lost, so his next letter to the Corinthians became known as Corinthians. 1 Corinthians 1:1-4:21.[7]

56-57 A.D.

Opposition from certain “apostles” at Corinth forced Paul to make a “painful visit” (2:1)., during which he was verbally abused. He then sent a “severe letter” demanding that his opponents be disciplined (2:3-9;8:8-12). Sometime later, Titus came to Paul in Macedonia with news that his opponent had repented but that the church had been hurt when Paul visited them. T respond to this and to further the collection for the poor in Jerusalem, Paul penned another letter between 56 and 57 A.D., which is now known as 2 Corinthians. 2 Corintians 1:1-2:4.[8]

56-57 A.D.

During Paul’s three month stay in Greece in 56 and 57 A.D. (Acts 20:2-3), he wrote his letter to the Roman believers. In this letter, he thoroughly explained God’s plan of salvation and how salvation should affect the lives of believers. Romans 1:1-32[9]

56 A.D.

Paul began his return trip to Jerusalem near the ened of his third missionary journey, around 56 A.D. Acts 20:7-38.[10]

58 A.D.

There is little doubt that the apostle Paul was accepted into the inner circles of Jesus’ original followers. Indeed, in the year A.D. 58 he was arrested and brought before the Jewish High Prtiest Ananias, accused of being “ a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes” (Acts 24:5). According to Paul’s report, and also that of Luke, James the Just, Peter, and John, the three “pillars” of the church, gave him the “right hand of fellowship” and publicly endorsed his missionary preachiong to the Gentile Roman world (Galatians 2:9.) It was what he preached and taught that began to create problems.[11]

58 A.D.

The book of Acts records a subsequent visit of Paul to Jerusalem in 58 A.D. when the issue was raised directly. Paul appeared before James, who was still clearly in charge, as well as the “elders” of the community. They confronted him with a report they had received that he was teaching “the Jews who are among the Gentiles to forsake Moses, telling them not to circumcise their children or observe the tradition of Judaism” (Acts 21:21).

“To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews; to those uneder the Torah, I became as one under the
Torah, though not actually being under the Torah, that I might win those under the Torah; to those outside the Torah, I became as one outside the Torah, not bgeing without law, but under the Torah of Christ, that I might win those outside the Torah.”, (1 Corinthians 9:20-21)[12]

Acts ends Paul’s story abruptly in 58 A.D. and Luke wants to project a picture of reconciliation and harmony in his final scene between James and Paul.[13]

60 A.D.

During his Roman imprisonment, Paul wrote his letter to the Ephesian believers (60 A.D.). Ephesians 1:1-3:21.[14]

60 A.D.

Around the time Paul wrote Ephesians (60 A.D.), he also wrote to the believers at Colosse concerning a heretical movement that combined Greek philosophy with Jewish legalism. Colossians 1:1-4:18.[15]

60 A.D.

Paul sent a letter to Philemon along with his letter to the Colossian church (60 A.D.). In the letter to Philemon, Paul asked Philemon to forgive and reinstate his runaway slave, Onesimus.Philemon 1:1-25. [16]

c.60-92 C.E. Thomas. Unlike the four canonical gospels, which combine stories with sayings, Thomas is a collection of 114 sayings attributed to Jesus (including brief dialogues), supposedly transcribed by Didymus Judas Thomas, one of the Twelve. Some of the sayings contradict those found in the canonical gospels.[17]

61 A.D.

Paul wrote his letter to the Phiippians believers in 61 A.D., during his Roman imprisonment. In his letter he thanked the Philippians for the gifts they had sent him. He also encouraged the Philippians to remain strong in their faith. Philippians 1:1-2:30.[18]

It is surely an irony of history that the high priest Annas, son of the Annas who had presided at the trial of Jesus, was behind the murder of James, also at the season of Passover in the year 62 A.D.[19]

James was stoned to death in 62 A.D., an execution ordered by the High Priest in Jerusalem worried about the growing power of his movement. [20]

Following the death of James in 62 A.D., Eusebius reported that the remaining apostles gathered with those left of the family of the Lortd and they took counsel together as to who would succeed James. He wrote that “they all unanimously decided that Simeon the son of Clophas, was worthy of the throne.” Eusebius noted that this Clophas, mentioned in the gospel of John, was the brother of Joseph, huband of Mary,a dn thus also of Davidic lineage. There is good evidence that Clophas, legally the uncle of Jesus, was the second husband of Mary his mother, based on Levitate law.[21]

The cause of the upcoming war were of course complex but Josephus, having lived through it all, drew a most startling conclusion when he wrote:

But what more than all else incited them to the war was an ambiguous oracle, likewise found in their sacred scriptures, to the effect that at that time one from their country would become ruler of trhe world. This theyu understood to mean someone of their own race, and many of their wise men went astray in their interpretation of it. The oracle, however, in reality signified the sovereingnty of Vespasian, who was proclaimed Emperor on Jewish soil.

What Josephus asserts here is that the chief cause of the war was a religious one involving the expectation of the coming of the Jewish Davidic Messiah. According to Josephus it was a messianic fervor that fueled the fires of revolt. The population was convinced that God would intervene and not only rout the Romans from

Palestine, but, as the Hebrew Prophets had predicted, establish his chosen King as ruler over all nations. The specific “oracle”Josephus had in mind was evidently the “Seventy Weeks” prophecy of the book of Daniel that had market out a final apocalyptic period of 490 years that included the coming of an “anointed prince” or Messiah figure (Daniel 9:25). But ion retyrospect, after the disaster of the war and the destruction of the city of Jerusalem, Josephus charged that his pious countrymen had misread or overlooked a key portion of Daniel’s prophecy, namely its surprising conclusion:

After the sixty-two weeks (i.e., 483 years) and anointed one shall be cut off and shall have nothing, and the troops of the price who is to come shall destroy the city and sanctuary. (Daniel 9:26).

The “world ruler” who comes is none other than the emperor Vespacian, who does indeed “destroy the cvity and the sanctuary”, not the awaited Jewish Messiah. So who then would be the “anointed one” or “messiah” who is “cut off”? Josephus says nothing about that but the followers of Jesus had read Daniel’s prophecy in a similar way, even before the disaster of the Roman war. Their interpretation was likely spurred by the tragic and unexpected murder of their leader James the Just in 62 A.D.

James, descended from the royal line of David, and thus aptly called a “messiah” or “anointed one”, had indeed been killed precisely seven years before the Romans laid siege to the city of Jerusalem in the summer of 69 A.D.. That was seven years short of the completion of the 490 year period, precisely as Daniel had predicted. The “end of the age” could not be long following.[22]

62 and 63 A.D.

Paul wrote his first letter to Timothy from Macedonia between 62 and 63 A.D. In this letter, he he admonished Timothy to refute the heresy being taught in the Ephesian church and to oversee the church’s growth.[23]

62 and 63 A.D.

Around the time Timothy was battling heresy in the Ephesian church, Titus was having considerable difficulty with a similar heretical movement in Crete. Paul wrote his letter to Tiotus between 62 and 63 A.D. to encourage Titus to deal with the heresy in the Cretan church. Titus 1:1-3:15.[24]

64 A.D.

In 64 A.D., Peter wrote his first letter to remind the churches in northeast Asia Minor of the blessings of their salvation and to encourage them to persevere through their persecution. 1 Peter 1:1-2:12.[25]

64 A.D.

When fire broke out in Rome in 64 A.D., destroying three quar4ters of the city, Nero blamed the Christians and had many of them in Rome arrested and killed. Tacitus, the Roman historian, offers us the gruesomne details. Those captured were torn to death by dogs, crucified, and set on fire on the grounds of the imperial palace whle Nero invited the populace for the display and rode around in his chariot.[26]

An emergin cult calling themselves Christians is the perfect target. The leader of the Christians, Peter, is an outlaw. To be a Christian at that time meant you were a traitor. It is a crime. Those rounded up included Peter, their 64 year old leader, the first disciple of Jesus Christ. According to legend, Peter asked to be crucified upside down. He felt he wasn’t worthy to die like his savior. Peter was supposedly buried in a shallow grave on Vatican hill. Over the centuries that grave was lost. [27]

64 and 65 A.D.

Between 64 and 65 A.D. some churches were being overrun by a false teaching that denied the return of Christ. Jude wrote to counter these teachinbs and to encourage the believers to persevere in their faith. Jude 1:1-16. [28]

September 15, 1254: Marco Polo, born September 15, 1254, told of meeting Chinese Jews in his 1286 journey into China.[29]

• September 15, 1348

• On the Day of Atonement, three Jews and a Jewess in Chillon, a town near Lake Geneva were tortured in an attempt to get them to confess to charges of well poisoning that was the allege cause of the Black Death.[30]

• 1348

• European Jews are blamed for the Black Death. Charge laid to the Jews that they poisoned the wells. Massacres spread throughout Spain, France, Germany and Austria. More than 200 Jewish communities destroyed by violence. Many communities have been expelled and settle down in Poland.[31]

• 1348-1351

• Even the Black Death, or bubonic plague (1348-1351), which carried off a third of Europe’s population, was put into the service of killing Jews. Before the Black Death swept Europe, it had hit Mongolia and the Islamic Empire. Mongols, Mohammedans, and Jews had all died together without anyone having thought of blaming the Jews. But to medieval man it did occur. [1] The bubonic plague wreaked destruction in the Near East Before spreading to Europe, wiping out a third or more of its population. Jews were often blamed for spreading the disease by poisoning wells and were often tortured until they confessed their complicity. Pope Clement IV moved to quash the absurd charges, blaming the scourge on the devil in a paple decree, but to no avail. [32]

• 1348-49

• The Armleder massacres, charges of desecrating the Host at Deggendorf, Straubing, and Landshut, and the persecutions following the Black Death (1348-49), brought catastrophe to the whole of Bavarian Jewry. Many communities were entirely destroyed, amongt them Ansbach, Aschaffenburg, Augsburg, Bamberg, Ulm, Munich, Nuremberg, Passau, Regensbuirg, Rothenburg, and Wuerzburg.

• Those who had fled were permitted to return after a time under King Wencelaus. [33]

• Jews move from (eastern) Germany to Lemberg and Ternopol, Russia in 1348.[34][35]

1349, Jews expelled from Hielbronn (Germany).[36]

1349-1360 Jews expelled from Hungary [to Czech].[37]

September 15, 1485: Pedro Arbues, Canon of the Cathedral of Saragossa was attacked while praying. He died two days later, and when the news went public, the Christian community gathered to swear revenge. The attack was planned by prominent Jews (Conversos) of Aragon including Sanch de Paternoy, Master of the Royal Household; Gabriel Sanches, the High Treasurer of the kingdom; and Francisco de Sante Fe, assessor to the Governor of Aragon. The results of this “were that nearly 200 people had revenge struck upon them, some were murdered outright and some were beheaded with their mutilated bodies put on display. Some were imprisoned, some committed suicide to alleviate their suffering, and some fled to France.” The Church later made Arbues into a Saint in 1867.[38]

September 15, 1614: Mass murder of Jews in Salonica, killed while returning from the Dolia market.[39]

September 15, 1615: The Sultan, aware that killing Shabbtai Zvi would make him a martyr, instead “convinced” Shabbtai that converting to Islam was in his best interest On this day, he was brought before the Sultan, and he took off his Jewish head dress, replacing it with a Turkish turban. The repurcussions of his conversion sent shock waves throughout the Jewish world. [40]

1615 Jews expelled from Worms.[41]

September 15, 1752: The Merchant of Venice was presented in Williamsburg, Virginia. It was the first dramatic production by a professional troupe in the 13 Colonies. There is irony that Shylock made such an early appearance in the one place in the world where the stereotype did not even begin to fit.[42]

September 15, 1776

The British under General Howe occupy New York after the Continental Army evacuates the city.[43]

September 15, 1777: The Hessians did not conduct themselves

well today, they began to play on their violins and became

very jolly. When Bro. Bader heard that they had taken

the bass violin from the chapel, he sent an under officer to

demand it, but he failed to obtain it, so he went himself.

They made room for him, took off their hats and begged

that he would let them use it, that they were not doing any-

thing wrong. He replied that he would not discuss that

point, but the instrument should not be used in that way;

took it away and put it in a secure place. Then they formed

a circle, fiddled and danced with each other until a shower

of rain scattered them, for they did not obey either the ser-

geant of the guard or their officers. Several subsequent

attempts to obtain the bass violin failed, and they were told

that they would not have dared to behave so before a par-

sonage in Hesse* and if they continued to misbehave he

would send an express to town and make a formal com-

plaint against their insolence. [44] There is no doubt that a Goodlove ancestor was at this fracas, and was probably a ringleader.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 1792

At Mount Vernon : Issues a proclamation respecting the

opposition to the excise laws imposing a tax on domestic

distilled spirits.*

* The proclamation was sent to Thomas Jefferson, at Montieello, for his

signature, and then published at Philadelphia, September 27.

The excise law of the 8d of March, 1791, was extremely offensive to the

people in many parts of the country, but especially to the inhabitants of Pennsylvania west of the Alleghany Mountains, whiskey at that time being their most important item of trade. Soon after the publication of the law public meetings were held in the counties of Payette, Alleghany, Westmoreland, and Washington, at which the law was denounced as inimical to the interests of the country, and at a meeting in Pittsburgh, August 21, 1792, resolutions were passed recommending that no intercourse or dealings should be held with any one who had accepted or might accept an office to carry out the provisions of the act ; and that all aid, support, or comfort should be withheld from them. In course of time this movement assumed an organized form, which finallj' culminated in armed opposition and violence.

The proclamation earnestly admonished and exhorted all persons to refrain and desist from combinations to obstruct the operation of the law, " inasmuch as all lawful ways and means will be strictly put in execution for bringing to justice the infractors thereof and securing obedience thereto." [48]

Gray, September 13, 1893, at her parents home. Nettie died

September 15, 1911. Nettie and Richard were both doctors in

Anamosa, Iowa before moving to Texas, where their daughter,

Ruth Johnson lives today. They had a son, Richard, who died

at the age of 6 in July 1908, while the family was visiting

Nettie’s parents. The boy is buried at Jordan’s Grove. [50][51]

September 15, 1921: The chief selling point of rural school sonsolidation among Iowa farm families had always been that the consolidated school brought a modern, yet still rural community controlled high school within easy reach of every famr child, both physically and economically. The disempowering of rural neighborhoods vis-à-vis more expansive communities and conflicts between rival conceptions of community were contentious from the earliest days of the consolidation movement in Iowa. By 1921, however, the economic calculus of rural school consolidation was also centrally on the public agenda. The next week the Manchester Press reprinted an editorial from the Independence Bulletin=Journal, which argued that the emphasis on the high school was totally misplaced:

Only a small proportion of our youth go through the high schools and still smaller proportion of those go to college. And yet our whole system is based upon the latter minor fraction. And the worst of the situation is that the policy is so expensive that the burden of taxation has become crushing. Our schools have not only drilled into the worst possible class methods but their cost increases every year… It is the belief of this paper that the public shoul look the situation squarely in the face and determine that while every

American child should have the opportunity to secure a thorougjh groundwqork in the fundamentals and therefore become fitted for good citizenship, the small minority who aspire to higher education should he allowed to work out their own salvation.[52]

September 15, 1935[53]: The anti-Semitic Nuremberg racial laws were passed by the Nazis. The Nuremberg Laws defined Reich Citizenship. Citizens of Germany had to be of kindred blood. All Jews were defined as not being of German blood as a matter of law. This legalized the division between Aryans and non-Aryans. Jews were defined as anyone with at least one Jewish grandparent. The Jews are returned to the legal position they had occupied in Germany before their emancipation in the 19th century. [3][54]

Jewish rights rescinded. The Reich Citizenship Law strips them of citizenship. The Law for the Protection of German Blood and German Honor:

Marriages between Jews and citizens of German or kindred blood are forbidden.

Sexual relations outside marriage between Jews and nationals of German or kindred blood are forbidden.

Jews will no be permitted to employ female citizens of German or kindred blood as domestic servants.

Jews are forbidden to display the Reich and national flag or the national colors. On the other hand they are permitted to display the Jewish colors.[2] [55]

September 15, 1941: The Nazis killed 800 Jewish women at Shkudvil, Lithuania.[56]

• September 15, 1941: Eighteen thousand, six hundred Jews are murdered outside Berdichev, Ukraine.[57]

• September 15, 1941: In the Netherlands, laws are invoked banning Jews from many public places.[58]

• September 15-October 13, 1942: At least 150,000 Jews from Bessarabia and Bukovina are deported to Transnistria, and some 90,000 die there.[59]
