Gaza: Rockets Hit Southern Israel
IAN DEITCH 08/22/11 04:13 PM ET

JERUSALEM — Palestinian militants in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip launched rockets and mortar shells into southern Israel Monday, despite an unofficial truce meant to defuse escalating exchanges of rocket fire and Israeli airstrikes.

Around midday, a group that had held out from joining the cease-fire announced it would comply. Even so, Palestinians launched two rockets into Israel a few hours later, the military said. They caused no injuries but damaged property and set a fire to a field.

The latest round of violence began with a deadly attack on Israelis near the Egypt-Israel border on Thursday when gunmen who appear to have originated in Gaza and crossed into southern Israel through the Egyptian desert and ambushed vehicles, killing eight people. Six were civilians and two were members of Israeli security forces responding to the incursion.

That touched off deadly Israeli airstrikes and heavy Palestinian rocket fire from Gaza. Palestinians pummeled southern Israel with about 70 rockets Saturday night, killing 1 Israeli and wounding several others.

About 15 Palestinians, most of them gunmen, were killed in Israeli airstrikes.

"Most of those who dispatched the terrorists to carry out the attacks are now under the ground," Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak told Channel 2 TV Monday evening.

A Hamas official said Monday that militant groups in Gaza agreed to the truce to end three days of clashes between Israel and Gaza militants. Hamas security personnel would enforce the Egypt-brokered agreement, he said.

The Popular Resistance Committees had refrained from joining the cease-fire because an Israeli airstrike on Thursday killed several of its senior members, whom Israel accused of directing the border ambush, another Hamas official said Monday. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak for the other group.

On Monday afternoon, the PRC told a news conference it would join the truce as well, but a few hours later released a statement taking responsibility for firing the latest rockets salvo, breaching the cease-fire.

The Israeli government says it was not involved in cease-fire talks, but Israeli President Shimon Peres, touring a city hit hard by rocket fire over the weekend said, "If they will cease fire, there will be a cease-fire."

Taher Nunu, a spokesman for the Gaza Hamas government, said all militant Palestinian factions agreed to abide by the truce.

Militant leaders in Gaza were not answering their telephones, fearing the Israelis would be able to locate and assassinate them.

Condemnation of Israel's actions came from the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council, citing "flagrant violations" and "Israeli agression" in Egypt and the Gaza Strip. The GCC statement Monday did not mention the cross-border attack or the rocket salvos.

A senior Israeli military officer said Israel's newest rocket defense system did not provide full protection from a barrage of Palestinian rockets.

Col. Zvika Haimovitch said the Iron Dome system he oversees picked off four of five rockets in a salvo Saturday from the Gaza Strip. The one it missed killed an Israeli man, he said.

The sudden flare-up in violence also caused new friction in relations between Israel and Egypt, after Egypt accused Israel of killing five of its security personnel along the border while pursuing militants responsible for the frontier ambush on Thursday.

Under pressure from popular anti-Israel sentiment, the Egyptian government at one point threatened to recall its ambassador to Israel. Israel apologized and Egypt recanted.

Just a few minutes ago I addressed the world
from Jerusalem

Dear Jeffery,

Just a few minutes ago, I addressed the world from Jerusalem on the topic of Jew hatred. This past week has furnished reminder after reminder that this hatred is sadly alive and well. At least nine Israelis were killed in terrorist attacks. Egyptian “cyber attacks” have struck at Israel’s communications network. Despite a “cease fire,” rockets, missiles and mortars continue to rain down on southern Israeli towns and villages from Gaza.

Tonight, I briefly told my testimony and shared the story of the ten Boom family and how they suffered and risked so much to save hundreds of Jews from the Holocaust and the high price they paid for their love and faith. Right now, I’m asking you: How can we do less? How can we stand by and allow the world to divide the Holy City of Jerusalem and take the land God promised away from Israel? How can we do nothing while Jews are killed day after day simply for being Jews? How can we not do everything possible to defend Israel? I hope and pray that you will stand with me in standing for Israel right now.

Barukh atah Adonai eloheinu melekh ha-olam, ozier Yisrael bigvurah.

Blessed art thou, Lord our God, King of the universe, who girds Israel with might.

Your ambassador to Jerusalem,

Dr. Michael Evans

This Day…

August 23, 686: Birthdate of Charles Martel, hero of the Battle of Tours and grandfather of Charlemagne. The Battle of Tours took place in 732. Martel led the Christian forces against invading Moslem forces coming up from Spain. This victory ended the Moslem threat to Western Europe and led to the demarcation of Christian and Moslem Europe at the Pyrenees. The life of the Jewish people varied depending upon which side of the mountains they lived. Charlemagne, Martel’s grandson, would prove to be a benign ruler where his Jewish subjects were concerned.[1]

The golden Dome of the Rock, still the most brilliant jewel of the Jerusalem skyline, was built in 691 on the site form which Muslims believe Muhammad ascended to heaven. The Rock is said to be the stone of Solomon’s Temple on which the Ark of the Covenant stood.[2]

August 23, 1179: On August 23, 1179 Saladin arrived at Jacob’s Ford and ordered his troops to shoot arrows at the castle, thus initiating the siege of the castle. While the archers distracted the men inside the fortification, miners were digging a tunnel to breach the stone and iron walls at the north east corner of Chastellet. Once the tunnel was dug, Saladin’s forces placed large pieces of wood into the tunnel and set them alight. This process, called sapping, was a method in which the tunnel’s suppoets were burnt away forcing the walls to eventually collapse under their own weight. Sapping intitially failed for Saladin and his troops. So the troops were forced to put out the fire with buckets of water and were paid one gold piece per bucket to do so. After the fire was extinguished, the miners were instructed to relight the fire. At the same time, Baldwin having learned of this attack, called for reinforcements from Jerusalem. However communication between Baldwin and Chastellet were slow and by this time, the siege had been underway for several days. Baldwing’s forces inside the castle began to reinforce the main gates around the castle. Shortly after, the Muslims relit the fire in the tunnel under the castle, and the walls collapsed. As a result the Crusaders attempst to refortify the castle were invain and approximately six days after the siege began, Saladin and troops entered Chastellet. [3]

August 23, 1555: Calvinists are granted rights in the Netherlands, John Calvin, the founder of Calvinism was seen at least from a comparative point of view as being a philo-Semite. Some Jews felt that there was some sort of a bond between them and the Calvinists because both groups were under intense attack from the Catholic Church. The willingness of the Dutch to allow the Calvinists to settle in the Netherlands was an example of their religious toleration which is what made the “land of windmills and tulips” a hospitable place for the Jews of Europe.[5]

“August 23, 1776.- This morning early we were attacked on the right wing of the advanced guard. We brought up a cannon and drove them back. It rained bullets. Captain Congreve and one Constable were wounded by my side, and an Englishman was shot through. In the afternoon they attacked on the left side of the village and set fire to several houses, and we drew back into the village. Lieutenant von Donop, who stood on the left wing, was wounded in the breast; the ball glanced from his rib. I advanced on the right wing, where I occupied a big garden, with one hundred and fifty men, chasseurs and light infantry. As the enemy had fallen back from here, I relieved Lieutenant von Donop. The rebels were placing cannon on the highway, and our Scotch Highlanders had to make a battery across the road, with embrasures for two cannon. I had to cover the work, and so came to the advanced posts, where, however, I was little disturbed. [6]

August 23, 1783: Although Canada ceased to be a direct military target, it continued to play an important role as a haven for Loyalists and slaves fleeing from Patriots less concerned with other peoples' liberties than their own. On December 18, 1778, a force of New Jersey and New York Loyalists, The King's Orange Rangers, traveled to Liverpool, Nova Scotia, to help in its defense against Patriot privateers, privately owned ships that used pirate tactics to disrupt British shipping. The Rangers remained until August 23, 1783. Nova Scotia ultimately attracted 30,000 American Loyalists, one-tenth of which were fleeing African slaves. Of the slaves, one third eventually resettled in Sierra Leone. White Loyalists moved to Canada to flee the abuse of Patriot neighbors, African slaves came to British Canada in order to gain freedom from their Patriot owners.[11]
